Orange is such an unusual color for an Oscars red carpet. She’d have looked amazing in it no matter what the design was, but this woman-on-fire gown is just stunning on her. Somehow, it doesn’t look overdone or overwrought. The embroidered message on her shoulder is a tribute to her late mother Jacqueline, which is really sweet.

We hate short skirts with trains, but the shape is so interesting and the color so dazzling that we don’t really mind it here. Besides, the dress would be nothing without it.

It’s a cute design and the color looks great on her. The way she’s posing makes it seem like she’s not comfortable in it but we can’t see any exposure or fit issues from where we’re sitting.

A beautifully draped, minimalist gown with all the impact in its color. There have been a lot of necklaces worn with the wrong necklines this year, but we kinda love the pop this one gives the outfit.

It’s exuberant and ethereal in a really appealing way. We just hate the side cutout, which took this from an Iris van Herpen-like fantasy frock to something that looks a little awkward and unbalanced. Great color, though.

What a gorgeously luxe design. We think our favorite kinds of gowns right now are the ones that combine Renaissance or Gilded Age excess with sci-fi costume design elements. She looks like some sort of fantasy world priestess. We can understand wanting to minimal with the styling, but this needed big, exuberant jewelry fit for a pope.

We think it’s hilarious that once she got married, she completely ditched the body-con dresses that defined her style. Niecy’s got a wife now (as her clutch will attest). She’s got no time or need for shapewear anymore. Fortunately, she has not abandoned her bold and fun style preferences.

Who could argue with any of that? It’s a perfect dress for her. This is why D&G rules the red carpet despite their problematic past. They really deliver the goods for a wide range of celebrity clientele.

We don’t love the bustline, but everything else is fantastic. Spectacular color, great fit, gorgeous jewelry. We love that it’s a patterned sequin design, which we don’t see enough of on the red carpet. Lupita wore one too, although we’re gonna be blasphemous and say that we like this one more.

Tracee Ellis Ross in Carolina Herrera

We can’t begin to tell you how much it pains us to say this, but Tracee Ellis Ross had the second-worst dress at the Oscars (Jessie Buckley had the worst). The mouse ears are a terrible design and they throw off the fit in the bust. The whole bodice looks ready to collapse.
