Oscars 2022: Ladies in Black

Was there an unusual or notable number of black ensembles at the Oscars this year? Not at all. It’s a perrenial classic about as likely to be seen on a formal red carpet as a basic tuxedo. Fortunately, not one of these ladies went for basic. As we always say, you can wear the LBD on a red carpet, but you need to make sure it’s an interesting LBD.

Even better, make sure it’s not an LBD at all. Introducing the GBD: the Gigantic Black Dress. As we said in our Cosmo writeup, this looks like a bad mood in dress form and for that reason alone, it’s pretty much perfect for her.

Sharp and surprisingly restrained for her – and for Louis Vuitton, for that matter. We love her love for exuberant fashion, but this is one of the most conventionally chic looks she’s worn in a long time.

We love an accentuated shoulder as much as the next two queens, but this isn’t working. The bodice design is great. Those sleeves hang off her in a way that makes it look like there’s nothing in them.

And THAT’S the T. We are head over heels in love with this. She really should make Schiaparelli her go-to.

Big congrats to her team for securing this custom gown on such short notice, since little more than a week ago she’d revealed that she wasn’t invited to the ceremony. It’s gorgeous. In fact, it may be the best take on the standard sheer dress we’ve seen in years. Love the necklace.

This is absolutely hideous and we respect her so much for picking it. Look, we don’t like a lot of what LV puts out lately, but we also don’t like a boring Oscars red carpet. We can remember a time when all we talked about in the week after the Oscars was a series of samey-same princess gowns and sheaths. If girlfriend wants to come as a gothy fashion monster, we fully support it.

A legend showing up looking like a legend. That’s how it’s done.

It’s as classic as a goddess gown gets and she looks great in it. We don’t love braid details on gowns, but this is so subtle that it works.

Love the dress, love the necklace. They don’t go together, though. It looks weird sitting on the halter straps and we think it’s a bit too heavy for the design.

Simple, elegant and restrained in the manner we suspect she prefers, but that hem is awful.
