“Colin in Black & White” Premiere Red Carpet Rundown

Posted on October 29, 2021

We’ll be honest: We just fell in love with the shots of Ava DuVernay and Colin Kaepernick first. It was only after we could tear ourselves away from their fabulousness that we realized other people were in attendance and probably deserved a little coverage too, but come on. Just look at these two:

They both look amazing.

Ava DuVernay

The occasion was the premiere of DuVernay’s narrative series based on Kaepernick’s life, debuting on Netflix today. She has always been one of the rare exceptions to our “We don’t cover non-celebrity directors” rule, simply because she’s so ridiculously stylish and she’s something of a celebrity in her own right. She was known for her dramatically large skirts for years, so this look represents something of a major shift in her style. It’s a relatively unfussy design, but it comes off very elegant and restrained. As always, her hair looks amazing.

And speaking of amazing hair…

Colin Kaepernick

We can sort of understand keeping the fashion low-key when you’re all about serving that head silhouette, but we wish the outfit had a little color to it. Having said that, we love the richness of the jacket and pants.

Gayle King

We have a tablecloth in this exact plaid, but we won’t hold that against her, even if we do have to resist the urge to put some sort of tasteful fall centerpiece on her.

Regina King

This is fabulous and it totally negates our earlier point today about how she likes unfussy fashion. This time, the fuss is really working for her. Admittedly, that skirt comes off looking overdesigned the longer we take it in, but we just love the hat, jacket and boots.

Teyana Taylor

This sort of hard sexy is pretty much her style sweet spot. We kinda love this look, to our surprise. It’s like videogame character chic. And if you asked us to make any predictions about celebrity fashion in the next decade, we think that may be the one style turn we’re absolutely convinced is coming.
