I May Destroy You star Michaela Coel made history in two ways last night. First, by being the first Black woman to win an Emmy for Outstanding Writing For A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie and second, by making a neon yellow bandeau top look like the height of chic.
Okay, maybe one of those events is a weensy bit more important than the other, but we’re shallow round these parts, so we can’t help but wonder in awe at how she made this work. It’s sort of similar to Anya Taylor-Joy’s rhapsody in yellow in that we don’t much like the design or color, but cannot deny that both look absolutely stunning on her. She’s clearly in her style sweet spot when she’s wearing sleek designs that play off her looks, which means bold colors and ensembles that highlight the litheness of her form are always going to look fantastic on her, even if the design itself is only so-so. The flounce on the back bumps things up so that it comes off formal and the makeup and jewelry choices elevate it all considerably. Our only quibble is with the hem, which could be lower and a little less fussy. Still, she looks stunning.
What a fabulously thoughtful speech.
