Kelly Clarkson in Zimmermann on “The Voice” Finale

Kelly Clarkson has been stepping her fashion game inch by inch lately and we think the two dresses she wore for the season finale of The Voice are some of her best, most interesting choices yet, even though they don’t prove themselves to be the best choice for her, if that makes sense. They work and yet they also probably shouldn’t work.

She likes a lot of shape to her ensembles, and that often means a cinched waist and accentuated shoulder. She doesn’t always get the proportions right for herself (and to be fair, that’s entirely the fault of the fashion world, which is generally pretty terrible about offering non-model bodies a wide range of options), but this actually works better than it probably should. There’s definitely a bit too much of a juvenile factor to the shape of it, and we think those shoulders could’ve been reduced in volume by at least a half, but we kind of appreciate the attempt to give it a slightly harder feel, with the addition of a big black belt, black tights and boots. It doesn’t quite get where it needs to go, but this sort of vaguely countrified rocker look is exactly right for her.

Maria Bakalova wore this dress during her awards season promo tour and it’s interesting how different it comes across. On her, this was pure fantasy princess. On Kelly, it comes off way more Queen of Country, in the Loretta Lynn mode. Again, it’s a style that works pretty well for her, even though it’s puffy, fussy and high-necked in a way that we’d have told her to avoid. We appreciate the decision to try both of these dresses and even though we have some quibbles, we think an updated, high-fashion sort of prairie dress works for her if she can add some edge to the styling.
