Olivia Colman has made her public style preferences extremely clear over the past few years. The results haven’t always worked, but part of that comes down to the slightly unusual nature of those preferences.
She likes full coverage – up to the neck, down to the wrists and ankles – but she also likes boldly dramatic looks. In other words, modest but full of personality. Is there a better way of describing her? That’s why the style is such an impressive expression of herself. Since she was staying up well into the morning to attend these Oscars from their London shooting hub, it makes a bit of sense for her to choose a dress that wasn’t too ridiculously formal or hard to wear. We do, however, think that the high collar (which we have to admit, is the one element we don’t love), would be better balanced out if the hem were a few inches longer. We actually love an ankle hem length and it’s certainly showing those shoes off to best effect, but we tend to think that this would look a little better from a proportional perspective if it came off more like a gown.
And speaking of being full of personality, there’s no staged red carpet picture that’s going to accurately give you the full Olivia Colman experience:
