In truth, there’s not a lot to ogle here in terms of costume design. It’s all mid-aughts appropriate and seems to be deliberately low-key and un-flashy, which tracks. These shots do make us miss New York terribly – not that we were in the habit of making out on the sidewalk while in the city all that much, except for those times wh– you know what? We’ll stop here. But Denzel Washington’s directing this adaptation of the best-selling book about a soldier who dies in Iraq and leaves a journal behind for his baby son, so this has “heartbreaker” written all over it.
