Black-Owned Fashion Brand Spotlight: Cushnie

Designer Carly Cushnie’s eponymous brand is the go-to style for lady celebs with something to promote. It makes sense, given the photogenic, colorful, and slightly off-beat designs she specializes in. When a ladystar steps out in a Cushnie, she gets her picture taken. Examples from our archives? Why, certainly:

J Lo wore this dramatic jumpsuit in September at the height of her awards season poledance for Hustlers.

Kristen Bell wore the brand for her Frozen II tour:

Michelle Obama modeled the brand (spectacularly) for Elle magazine in 2018:

Anna Kendrick wore an eye-catching design (with the absolute wrong shoes for it) during the A Simple Favor promo tour:

London-born Carly Cushnie co-founded her brand in 2008 after receiving her BA in Fashion Design from Parsons and interning at Donna Karan, Proenza Schouler and Oscar de la Renta. IN addition to the women above, her brand has been a favorite of Gal Gadot, Lupita Nyong’O, Ava Duvernay, and Padma Lakshmi. It seems to us that our coverage of her brand has been focused on the pieces we didn’t love (such is the nature of celebrity style blogging), but when you look at her work away from the glare of the red carpet, the impeccable fit, detailing and flair stand out:
