Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively at the “A Simple Favor” New York Screening

Posted on September 12, 2018

Miss Blake took a break from wearing 40 outfits a day to focus on just wearing one for the night while standing next to her far less exhausted co-star. Let’s see how they both did, yes?

Oh. Oh, dear.

Oh, sweetie. We’re afraid you never get it quite right. On the one hand, you can get lost in really fussy or overbearing looks. On the other hand, if you go classic and simple, you tend to recede into the background. It’s a tough row to hoe, dear. We sympathize. Having said that, we think this look could be improved dramatically by remembering that rare hard-and-fast fashion rule that we subscribe to wholeheartedly. Here it is: You can sport a goofy-ass hem or goofy-ass shoes, but if you try them both at the same time, you’re reducing yourself to a pair of legs with goofy-ass trim at either end. The design of that hem is not at all to our liking, but a simple pair of pale pink pumps would’ve radically altered the look and made it seem like one fun detail instead of a pair of overwhelming detauls. Also: something (ANYTHING) to make the hair more interesting would help.

The trend in ladytuxes seems to be sheer, dark blouses. We’re not opposed to it generally, but we haven’t seen many that make us love the choice. We absolutely agree that as the ladytux becomes a more ubiquitous formalwear option, moving it away from its white-collar-and-tie roots is a good idea. The point is not to dress in drag but to alter a longstanding classic of formalwear for modern women who don’t necessarily feel like wearing a gown. We think the idea of glittery shoes with a glittery top is a fun way to glam up the look. We just wish the top wasn’t so flimsy-looking. And this one rule really doesn’t change, regardless of who’s wearing it: A tux or formal suit jacket needs to be closed for standing and posing.

Having said all that, we kind of like this look. The little extra (in every sense of the word) touches like the snakes and the lace stockings are just so her.
