A portrait of two people trying not to look smug as hell.
The buzz on this film – and more importantly, on their performances in it – are reason enough for them to look smug. Apparently, standing ovations have been involved. We, being the shallow types that we are, just wish their style choices were working in tandem with their facial expressions. Instead they look kind of half-assed and perfunctory. We realize the New York Film Festival isn’t exactly a glamour fest, but still. This is a victory lap you guys. You’re both about to embark on some serious Oscar pole dancing and you each need to step up your style game.
To be fair, they both look fine. Her dress is very pretty and his suit is … okay, we guess. But that’s kind of our point. They should be coming out stronger than this.
