Why Miss Scarlett. It appears you do give a damn.
Yes, we would quibble with some of the details here. Let’s get that out of the way first. Hair’s too severe, eye makeup is weird and distracting, cutout is unnecessary. So noted. But as we noted with J Lo’s red carpet entry, the Governors Awards are kind of when the awards-track folks solidify their standings and declare themselves Up For Consideration. She’s got a real shot at several nominations for her performance in Marriage Story, which means she’s taking this moment to plant her golden flag. It’s not that she’s never worn anything like this before. Her red carpet offerings, while not always to our tastes or playing to her strengths as we see them, have nonetheless always been on point and well-coordinated looks that spoke of someone who understood what the red carpet’s actually for (self-promotion).
But with this look, there’s a definite sense of awards campaigning in both the style (lots of tasteful gold touches) and the level of polish and refinement. It’s a strong, declarative look that says – right down to the manicure – that she’s ready to pick up some trophies.
