Because drag IS fashion, darlings. At least when these two do it.
Miss Fame at the Iris van Herpen Fashion Show
This all appears to be correct and in order. There’s not much you can do to interpret a Van Herpen piece. You put it on and hope you can pull it off. Even so, we feel like the hair and makeup are slight let-downs. The eyepiece thing is doing a lot of work, of course. And you wouldn’t want to try and compete with any of the design elements on display here. But we still feel like it’s not quite as dramatic as it could be.
Violet Chachki at the Giambattista Valli Fashion Show
This, on the other hand, is perfectly rendered. The look is distinct, dramatic, character-based and on-point for the clothes. It takes an eye to look at this ensemble and decide a lacquered beehive with a spit curl and bee-stung lips was the way to go. But it not only works, it feels like no other styling choice would make as much sense as this one. That’s good drag.
