Style File: “Little” Stars Issa Rae, Marsai Martin, and Regina Hall

We have been neglecting these ladies, who have all been stepping out in one notable-to-eye-popping look after another on this promo tour.

We will rectify that immediately because we have opinions that need to be stated.

Issa Rae in Chloé

We fully admit that we have a bias against sweater dresses. Sure, they’re cozy, but rare is the sight of one of them approaching fabulousness. Most of the ones we’ve seen on celebrity promotional tours tend to come off heavy-looking and lounge-y. This one’s more of the same, as far as we can see. We don’t much love the color and the bust diamonds are a bit weird.

Marsai Martin in Esteban Cortázar

She has so much poise and charisma that she’s almost pulling this off, until you realize the possibility that she’s wearing a turtleneck and strapless cocktail dress at the same time. You almost had us there, Miss.

Regina Hall

Personally, that’s way more in the ruffle, smocking and pleat departments than we’d prefer to see – especially in a bold print. But this is our favorite of these looks. It’s got a slightly boho feel but comes of breezy and easy. It works. Those sandals do not.

We love the coat. We do not love anything else. Miss Issa, we’re glad you’re mixing things up on the fashion front, but we’re afraid you’ve tipped over to the side where you have far more misses than hits.

Marsai Martin in Ralph & Russo

Her youth allows her to get away with a lot and she’s smartly taking advantage of that. We love this look – including the makeup. It’s youthful and bold, possibly even a little silly. The shoes, however, feel like they belong with a much more mature and glamorous outfit.

Regina Hall in Zimmermann

It’s not reinventing the wheel, but it’s a really cute dress that looks great on her. We think it could have been bumped up with a statement piece of jewelry and a more eye-catching pair of shoes, though.
