Pop Style Opinionfest: Magical Nannies and Nasty Queens

Well, it’s all there in the title and the image, darlings. Enjoy.

Oh, we’re kidding. Of course we have more things to say. First:

We’re still prevented from giving a review, but that doesn’t mean we can’t discuss Mary Poppins Returns in the broadest of terms, explaining our thoughts on the original film (turns out, neither of us are big fans) and how you should definitely take that into consideration when we gush approvingly about the sequel.

Then:

A full-blown but spoiler-free discussion and review of The Favourite, starring Emma Stone, Olivia Colman and Rachel Weisz. We have LOTS to say about this one, especially the three lead actresses and how insanely good they all are, but also how fresh and modern the directing and storytelling were and how the costumes eschewed complete accuracy in order to deliver something a lot more interpretive and memorable than a strict Masterpiece-style period drama. In short: this film is mean but hilarious; visually arresting and stunningly acted.

There’s also a few bits in there on the critical reaction to Aquaman and what that means for DC’s film futures as well as the latest foreign language series recommendation from Lorenzo, who’s moved on from Scandinavian detective dramas to Spanish crime dramas.

And finally, as two gay men old enough to be his fathers, we got right into it discussing Shawn Mendes’ comments about being perceived as gay and how much stress it’s caused him. Perhaps not surprisingly, we aren’t in full agreement on what this means or whether he spoke appropriately.

All the laughter, all the tears, all the drama and most importantly, all the OPINIONS. It’s all for you, darlings. Because we love you so. Also because we can’t keep our mouths shut and there’s a paycheck involved, but these are minor, secondary considerations. This podcast is nothing but love. And opinions. And a little bit of bickering. The usual, in other words.
