WERQ: Laverne Cox in Donna Karan at the 2014 Creative Arts Emmy Awards

Posted on August 18, 2014

Looks like the “Orange Is The New Black” ladies took the opportunity to SLAY on the red carpet. Because Miss Lady has never worn a dress that looked this spectacular on her:

It cuts into her a little bit at the bustline (and we still think she needs both a hair and makeup rethink), but the color and fit are amazing for her and she looks as polished as she’s ever looked. You WERQ that sweet success, darling.

Glorious! [Makes grabby hands at Marchesa clutch.]

    • bitchybitchybitchy

You grab one end of the clutch and I’ll pull on the other end.

  • fiddlecub

    Holy cow, lady is gorge.

    • Anna Vasquez

“If there’s a cure for this, I don’t want it.”

  • Gorgeous! This is the best her hair has looked in a red carpet. Personal best!

  • Cynica

    Standing ovation. BRAVA, darling.

  • NMMagpie

  • Alexis Wenceslao

Serving CONFIDENCE on a golden platter! WERQ IT GURRL!

  • Elisabeth Ashley

Her hair looks much better than it usually does, but the dress is so amazing on her so I can’t bring myself to say anything bad!

    • Alaska Raptor Rehabilitation

Agreed about her hair, parting it just a bit left of center worked wonders.

  • sugarkane105

That hair is busted, but the dress is fab.

  • Kitten Mittons

Love this!! Love the muted sparkle of the dress, and the sparkly accessories. It’s all gorgeous, and she looks so pleased. You should be, honey, you should be.

  • Dany

The hair I can take or leave, but I’ve noticed the makeup is never as flattering as it should be. She tends to go for these super GLAM!!! makeup looks, and I don’t think it suits her coloring. Imagine if she went for a more earthy look….combined with an asymmetrical bob. WERQ 24/7!!!!

    • Constant Reader

I agree. Laverne is too beautiful and radiates too much confidence to need makeup that heavy. She can dial it back a notch or two and still look glam.

  • KateShouldBeWorking

Oh, Honey; I’m so happy for you!

  • Latin Buddy

Looks like the studio hired a stylist for its gals because they all look amazing.

  • styrch

Love it! Paint it red and she’d be Jessica Rabbit!

  • @Biting Panda

    Shutting the Shmemmys down!!

  • MilaXX

I even think she stepped it up a bit on the hair and makeup. I like the off center part and the absence of the white out french manicure. I think she looks pretty.

    • demidaemon

Agreed. It is miles better than her last appearance (even if I wish she would ditch the ombre).

    • I particularly like her eye makeup here. Possibly a bit heavy for day time, but I think it’s flattering to her.

    • littlemac8

I wonder if being on the cover of Time magazine gets better designers coming her way? I love that she looks relaxed and happy!

  • marlie

From the neck down, perfection. From the neck up, hair and makeup are nice, but not quite perfect. STILL, though, an overall WERQ because that dress is beautiful on her. Slinky and sexy, but classy at the same time.

  • Anna

  • CB

The hair could still be better, but the softer side part is definitely an improvement over the center part she favors. Overall she looks fantastic!!

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I agree that the side part is a better look, now we just have to zhush the hair and makeup to showcase Laverne as she deserves to be.

  • Glam Dixie

She looks amazing but I can’t figure out if it is supposed to have all of those folds across the middle or if it’s pulling badly. Her hair is also looking upgraded for the event.

  • JasmineAM

She looks so beautiful, but I can’t help but agree with you guys over her hair and makeup. My friend that went to high school with her told me that she was very nice. I also love that she’s from my home state!

  • MarissaLG

Her hair is looking much more voluminous than usual and looks fantastic. LOVE the color of the gown and the amount of sparkle without looking tacky. WERQ!

  • stellavision

And cobalt blue is the new AWESOME.

    • It works so well with her skin tones. She should never not wear that color.

  • Gwyndall

Am I the only one that thinks the dress is a size or two too small??? It’s a great silhouette for her, but the noted bustline issue is even overshadowed by all of the pulling at the waist and hips. I don’t think that’s ruching, kittens. I do like the side part and softer look overall.

    Snaps of Respect

  • gingerella

She looks great, and I love that color. I agree about the hair, but in last month’s O Magazine, she said that her fall must was a new hairpiece but she needed to talk to her money manager because the really good ones are very expensive, so I think she’s on it.

    • Mothra

  • Yoshio

The color is wonderful on her and the accessories well chosen. This is the most elegant she has ever looked.

  • Other than the slightly wonky fit across the middle, this is a slam dunk, Girlene.

  • Thomas

It’s not a werq for me because of the hair. A new weave and it’d be a werq.

  • quiltrx

    She’s like a blue-clad Jessica Rabbit…and I mean this in a very good way!

  • Mothra

She looks very pretty and even though I am still not loving that knife sharp part in her hair, the soft curls are so much lovelier than the straight iron look.

  • alyce1213

The dress is beautiful on her, but it needs a little more ease at the hips. Her hair is pretty and her poise is amazing.

  • Look at her FACE! She is feeling it, which makes it a werq for me (although in a perfect world she’s rethink the hair and have it let out 1/2″).

    • Why is she not working a side part? I think it would look great.

      • I agree. And maybe an asymmetrical bob?

  • Noah

Get one in every color, Laverne! This is flawless!

  • kimmeister

Oooh, I like her much better with her setting on “elegant” much more than “hoochie.” Even her face seems more serene than usual.

  • KinoEye

Did a little jig in my office chair when I saw these. I actually think the makeup is a personal best here, and she was born to rock that Donna Karan. What a knockout.

  • kategs

    Good lord she is stunning!

  • Kent Roby

I bet she still wore fishnets under that dress, but wowza, she looks terrific!

  • Janet B

    She looks elegant.
The softness of her hair is a nice change.

  • HeatherMcIlrath

  • Fred Vaughn

    I approve this message.

  • NinjaCate

She looks positively RADIANT in that second shot. Wow.

  • asherlev1

I’ve been waiting for this post!! <33333

  • Sarah

She has a beautiful smile, too.

  • queeniethebold

i couldn’t possibly love her more.

And seeing “Laverne Cox” paired with “Donna Karan” and “Marchesa.” Finally! No more second-string fashion for you, Miss Lady!

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Love this gown on Laverne, even though it’s a bit tight in the bust area. It’s such a smart, glam look, love the accessories, too.

  • James

Her ladies look too squished to me for it to be perfect. Otherwise I think she looks fab.

  • KendraMR

::Bows down to fierceness:: I think it’s a personal best for her makeup, but I do agree about the hair. However, homegirl is WERQ-ing that dress!

  • stubbornthoughts

    Modern Dreamgirls realness!

  • Shelby

So beautiful and fierce! I actually love her hair, and I like that she’s not parting it down the middle.

  • frannyprof

    Love that color on her!

  • smallgirlsaretrouble

    WOW. Just. Wow.

  • Sherilyne Cox

From one Cox to another: Well played, Madam. Well played, indeed. Absolutely stunning, Miss Namesake.

  • greyhoundgirl

Beautiful. And I think she’d look great in shorter hair that showed off those shoulders.

  • snarkykitten

I wish I looked that good in a strapless sequined gown!

  • GemFemme

Love how the blue sequins seem to be cascading down her stunning body. Yeah!

  • Swiftlytiltingplanet

    Fabulous! Just fabulous.

  • ashtangajunkie

Divine. What a spectacular colour on her.

  • Evil Edie

Tall glass of liquid sparkle. Drink it up bitches!

  • demidaemon

WOW! AGAIN! And yay for big name designers finally lending her stuff!

  • She looks incredible. That color, and the dress looks as though it was poured over her figure. The clutch is fab. Her headsuit looks slightly less blowsy than usual.

  • gitchygitchymama

sofia vergara better start stepping it up………….she got some stiff competition coming her way.

  • StillGary

    Movie star dress!!!!

  • holla

maybe it’s the lighting, but the makeup seems toned down from her usually RC look, which I think makes her even more beautiful.

  • julnyes

AHHHHHHH, she looks amazing! I love that she didn’t go for the middle part cockier-spaniel hair. Just that subtle shift of the part makes a huge difference. The blue of the dress works beautifully on her. Definitely a WERQ.

  • LibKat

Wow, she and Uzo conquer the world with the power of fierce. THAT would be a Marvel movie.

  • Lilyana_F

    Shutting. It. Down.

  • Tina M.

DAMN, GIRL. You did it, you look like Beyonce. Many have tried, most have failed. This, truly, is a WERQ worth drooling over.

  • KiP07

I love how beautiful and sexy she looks in this. She doesn’t need any more bandage dresses! Also, did anyone else notice how good her hair looked on the show this season? It looked a bit chicer and less Beyonce-beauty-pageanty.

  • Lilithcat

Simple and elegant. Wish more people would do that. The hair, not so much. Ratty ends and roots are not attractive.

  • Winterlight

  • Miss Atomic

It’s nice to see her part her hair on the side. The dress is a little *yawn*, but she looks nice.

  • mickiemonkey

    Goddess. I bow.
