Emmys 2014: Lucy Liu in Zac Posen

Posted on August 26, 2014

Even when we’re torn on the dress, she still manages to make us gasp a little. No matter what she’s wearing, the lady knows how to wear it.

Here’s what: We’re glad that the color is pale and ethereal, because the dress itself is pretty close to overworked and we like that the lack of color manages to tone down all that frippery. And we think the shape and the fit are spectacular. But we just can’t get away from the “old bras” feel of the color. And it’s not a shade that looks all that great against her skin tone. It’d be hard for her to look bad, exactly, but we find ourselves thinking that if she absolutely must go neutral with this dress, we’d rather see it in dove gray.

    • Mothra

That dress was made at a bridal shower out of really nice toilet paper.

    • rh33

“I dreamt I won an Emmy in my Maidenform bra!”

      • MoHub

You, my dear, are seriously dating yourself.

        And me as well.

        • Kent Roby

Just because rh33 (and you, and I) know about those quaint ads of yesteryear, it doesn’t mean that any of us were actually around then! I also know the entire Gettysburg Address, but I PROMISE that I wasn’t there to hear it in person! I assume that all of us are sharing the dread of wondering what it will be like to one day turn (gasp) 30!

          • rh33

I’m following Jack Benny’s lead and turning 39. (Yikes! I just exposed my age again!)

            • MoHub

I tried to start counting backwards when I hit 50, but my body told me otherwise.

        • gloriana232

I only know this through the Mad Men nod :|

          • MoHub

That’s what scares me about Mad Men. I actually lived through that period, and I’m not ready to be retro.

            • Constant Reader

My mom texted me last month from a county fair to tell me that the brand and style of baby stroller I had was on display in the antiques barn. I’m not just retro, I’m antique.

            • MoHub

              I feel your pain.

            • decormaven

              I prefer “vintage.”

            • MoHub

Considering that some ’70s red-carpet wear is designated vintage, I’m not quite sure how to take that.

            • Constant Reader

Well, vintage sounds fancier — like vintage wine. Right?

            • Raspberry2012

It means WE’RE vintage. And believe me, I’ve seen nearly every toy I ever had as a kid out at “vintage” toy stores and antique marts.

        • Raspberry2012

And me. But it doesn’t matter, that was awesome!

      • evave2

Oh yes. I saw her bra TOO when they did the partial side view. I always look for the one thing that Zac Posen does that is too much and I think the bra business AND the fact it is REALLY sheer over her stomach. Either one by itself would be too much. Both together WITH the 1950s underwear color/texture makes a whole mess of too much by Zac today. But she herself looked so lovely. Gosh, I love that she is giving FACE and not bitchface or duckface or pursed-lip-face but just lovely lovely FACE.

    • Kathy_Marlow

I think it would be good in an icy blue too.

      • MoHub

        I’m envisioning mint green.

      • http://redheadedwolf.wordpress.com/ Laura Renee

Or a midnight blue — I think a darker color would minimize the frippery.

        • scoobysnacks

I saw it and desperately wished it to be in midnight blue before I ever scrolled down to the comments, I swear. I need this dress to be blue.

        • Raspberry2012

I’m on board with midnight blue.

    • SherryN

I was thinking “old slip” myself!

      • Sophie

That is exactly what I was thinking, and dove grey would only emphasise that feeling.

    • Latin Buddy

      Does this woman ever age?!

      • Kent Roby

        Only in reverse, apparently!

        • MikeW_Vegas

There is a portrait in an attic someplace with her portrait.

    • sienna elm

      I can’t handle the seashell cups :(

      • Jennifer Bober

Yeah, that was what was bugging me too. It’s the fact that you can see them through the dress.

        • GSMSF

Me too. If the top was just lined like the bottom it would be a very pretty dress.

      • J. Preposterice

i could handle them better if they were the right size for her, but they EPICALLY do not fit her poor boobs.

      • Raspberry2012

It’s easy – just curve your hands around her boobs, and…

        Oh. Not what you meant…

    • FibonacciSequins

Agree with everything you said, TLo. I wasn’t seeing all this detail on tv last night, and it looked better. Still, if anyone can carry this off, Lucy can.

    • lunchcoma

Yeah, this needs to be some other color. The draping and the variable levels of sheerness make me think it’s an especially fancy liner, not a finished dress.

      • Gatto Nero

The slightly yellowed white (in this lighting, and on my monitor) detracts, and a cooler pale color would improve it.
Posen’s designs almost always look overworked — and this has been one of his repeated criticisms to PR contestants.

        • Sophie

I hope one of the contestants laughs in his face. Not only are his designs almost always overworked, they almost always look the same too.

    • Mrs. Julien

      Deluxe toilet paper mummy costume.

    • http://sleepingfoxstitchery.weebly.com CLoverleaf

Are the cups supposed to be that visible? Are those added? I can’t get past the weird little cups.

    • NMMagpie

Anything to play down those bra cups. That’s all you see.

    • TonyGo

Walking dust ruffle from a B&B.

    • chelseaad

Has anyone seen her in Kill Bill? She has the most beautiful freckles and they are all caked over with makeup here. And lol at the “old bras” comment.

      • lexilexi

Yeah how do TLo know the color of old bras?

        • Sarah

Everyone has a mother, for one.

          • chelseaad

Yeah, I think everyone knows that color. It was the perfect way to describe this dress. Leave it to TLo!

    • marlie

I’m not getting an “old bra” color from this dress. It’s more of an ivory or eggshell color to me. I like the dress, and she looks great in it, but it’s definitely a bit subdued and understated – and that’s ok. But please, PLEASE tell me she’s not wearing shoes with a clear plastic platform (see last picture).

      • Sarah

Lordy, IDK if they’re clear plastic but dang, those are practically Gaga height.

      • Anna

OMG, I just noticed those. I’m terrified that those are clear plastic platforms.

      • higgledypiggledy

Holy cow, good eye. Those things are scary – both for the height and for the possibility that they are clear plastic.

      • scimomma

yes she is and you can see why the publicist/wire service didn’t announce the maker! blech.

      • kmk05

The height makes me think they’re pole dancing/stripper heels (those come standard with 7″ platforms, which is what these look like). To be honest, I think all stylists must have them on had when they forget to get dresses hemmed! The dress bottom is skimming the ground even with the extra height.

The bigger problem I have with the shoes is that they seem small and her toes are over the edge.

    • Kent Roby

She is so ridiculously gorgeous that I can’t even hate on the overworked design of the dress.

      • conniemd

Yeah, and Zac Posen definitely overworks. As TLo noted, the overworked nature is less apparent in a pale shade.

    • Sarah

Very fancy peignoir. Gray, and maybe not so transparent would have been really nice.

    • @Biting Panda

      Draping around a dress form.

    • hughman

“Old Urine” is a color you don’t see on the RC every day.

    • AnnaleighBelle

I just love how she always manages to look willowy but she’s short.

    • frannyprof

Can’t get past the self-stick bra cups. No, I’d say this is, overall, not a good look.

    • MoHub

      Zac Posen does Marchesa.

    • Violentcello

I immediately started imagining the dress in pale pink tones. It never, ever occurs to me to imagine anything in gray. It’s such an office-wear default that I forget it’s an option.

    • Anna

This is the long version of that pink one Katie Holmes wore isn’t it? The pale hue is a good thing in both cases, and Lucy Liu fills it out much better, but still NAY to the old slip/old bras vibe.

      • Kitten Mittons

        Good eye.

    • Comfy

It’s what I’d imagine She-Ra would wear to the Emmy’s if she was trying to look classy.

    • Jitka Pavlíková

The dress reminds me oso much of The Bodies exhibition.

    • TheGrandSophy

I don’t like the visible bra cups

      • tallgirl1204

You said that so much more genteel-y than I did.

    • Jaeda Laurez

It moved beautifully on camera, but I don’t love it in photos. I like the idea of it, but the execution of the bodice is a bit off.

    • TAGinMO

Once you see the Stonehenge/Alien face, it cannot be unseen.

    • http://angrynerdgirl.net/ Jessi03

Well, if you’re going to wear your underthings to the Emmys, that’s the way to do it.

    • Constant Reader

It looks like one of those heavy-duty one-piece undergarments women wore in the 50s with a slip over it.

      • MoHub

They were referred to as corselettes back in the day. My mom was still wearing those a few years ago until we forced her out of them.

        • demidaemon

I bet her ribs thanked you.

          • MoHub

I still have to fight to get her to adjust the straps right and wear the correct band size.

    • Akemi

The color is terrible, terrible, terrible, but she has the cutest figure and I love the way she shows it off.

    • samo_samo

Beautifully fitted lingerie. A change in the color would have made this a stunner.

    • gloriana232

Is it wrong that I just want Lucy Liu to wear everything so we can all bask in how amazing she looks in each and every ensemble? Emmy red carpet: All Lucy Liu All the Time edition?

    • HeisenbergHattie

Criticizing this dress is useless. It’s gorgeous on her. She looks happy wearing it. All her parts are covered. She looks like a lady.

      • Sly

        I agree.

      • Mr. J.

        D’accord.

    • BayTampaBay

      Of Course…SHE LOOKS GREAT!

    • alyce1213

That’s the best anyone’s looked in one of these Zac Posen lingerie dresses. I feel the color is too light to be old bra — it’s pale but bright, not dull or washed out. She looks great, as always.

    • clatie

      who just wore this dress?

      • alyce1213

        Katie Holmes, short and pink.

        • clatie

          Yep!

        • scimomma

I actually prefer the dress KH wore; the exposed boning here takes away from the ethereal look of the fabric (chiffon?) and treatment

    • James

She looks great while wearing toilet paper. I am sorry but that’s all I can see. And what even are those shoes?

    • Miss wks

MOM! Volleyball practice starts in 5 minutes and somebody swiped my kneepads….

    • j_am

I scrolled down to the commentary without looking at the designer. I read “the dress itself is pretty close to overworked” and immediately think “it must be Zac Posen!” Lo and behold, this is the case.

    • MartyBellerMask

I hate this dress. Love her, hate the dress. And I’m glad she didn’t trip on her stripper platforms.

    • Adrianna Grężak

Meh, the problem with Zac Posen is that he doesn’t know when to stop. The bodice is beautiful, even though those cups are distracting

    • Lex

The boob pads ruin the whole thing for me.

      • wontons

Yeah. The right one’s about to make a break for it.

Last night, when I couldn’t see this level of detail, I thought the dress was superb, although I think I’d like a warmer color on her.

    • Susan Collier

Nightgown. I think I saw it in Auntie Mame.

    • SugarSnap108

I really, really don’t like Zac Posen’s aesthetic. But I really, really like Lucy Liu. She is incapable of looking bad.

    • mapmakerscolors

First thought: She looks gorgeous! Second thought: ….I actually hate this dress. And I hated it more when she was onstage and the sheer parts were really noticeable. But she still looks gorgeous.

    • Paula Pertile

Its pretty, but a little too “bra-ey” (someone please help me with a better word for that).

      • Skippymom1

Brassiere-y? No? [thought the extra vowels might help] but I do get what you were going for…definitely too much bra going on in the upper regions. If that had left it a soft and flowing up top, as the skirt [I mean what is boob tape for?] I think it would have looked softer.

      • katetastrophe

        Tit-slingy

      • Kitten Mittons

        Bra-dacious?

    • Introspective

lucy is always gorgeous even if her dress is not…

    • LadyVimes

This could have gone bridal so easily, but Miss Lucy makes it work. Beautiful.

    • B_C_J

The fit of this dress is spectacular. I also like the detailing. It gives it an architectural feel which is amazing considering the softness of the fabric.

    • MissAmynae

Disappointing. She is one of the few women in Hollywood that isn’t afraid of a killer pattern, and avant-garde design. This was a missed opportunity.

The dress is overworked, we’ve all seen it before (in various versions), and the color is bland and unflattering.

      Her accessories are beautiful, though.

    • Tracy_Flick

I think she could camouflage herself in a stack of bags of fertilizer outside Home Depot, but I STILL love it.

    • Columbinia

The dress looks spectacular from some angles, like in the last shot. Maybe it looked best in motion.

    • surfergirl70

“Old bra” was the color of Taylor Schilling’s dress. Lucy’s dress is straight up ivory.

    • Janet B

      As usual, she looks gorgeous.
      Not really loving the dress.

    • Melmmmendes

Lol “old bras”. All I can see are boobs when I look at this dress.

    • Shawn EH

Emergency room chic; just needs blood stains.

    • Sherilyne Cox

I have no problem with the gown….pearl keeps her from looking like a runway bride, and allows us to focus on Lucy’s stunning smile, her lustrous locks, and feminine demeanor.

    • suzq

The gown is spectacular and gorgeous without being overwrought (like most of what Georgina Chapman does). Lucy is so pretty with just the right kind of coloring not to get washed out, but not so dark that all you see is the dress.

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

Dove gray would have worked much better, and the chest area needs to be reworked. The bra cups look odd. Still, Lucy looks pretty good.

    • Lori

I hate this dress, but man is she gorgeous.

      • Kitten Mittons

It’s amazing how good she can look in such a bad garment. The fact that it fits impeccably helps. It might look better in a different color, but that would only mask all the awful elements put into it.

      • bingo

there is an internet meme asking if Keanu Reeves is immortal as he never appears to age. I am forced to ask if Lucy Liu is immortal as well…post a 1994 photo of her beside this. incredible.

    • CT14

When I saw the title, I perked up at “Lucy Liu”, and then got depressed at “Zac Posen”.

She’s better than that dress, though I don’t think it could be worn better. Imagine a pale green or blue or color other than dingy bra? Anything is better.

    • CKMia

I wonder if the stars are told what color the Step ‘N Repeat is going to be, in which case I would not have chosen this… “un-color”.

    • GemFemme

Yawn on the dress but I love and covet the earrings.

    • Man Dala

Colourless colour, once in fashion soon to be rediscovered — La Roux.

    • http://www.readbarbara.com/ ReadBarbara

Looks like fancy spanx to me…maybe she just forgot to the dress over it.

    • http://kittysdrawings.com Esz

      Its a bit Mummy Bride…….

    • Martha Anderson

the cups make this a jarring wrong

    • StrandedFashionista

I noticed the earrings match the color of the dress close to exactly, if not exactly exactly, which is a nice touch all things considered.

    • livesarah

I think the colour is great on her, it’s the visible cups and boning that are all wrong.

    • jenno1013

The varying opacity of the layers gives the bottom half especially the look of power panels in a girdle. Me no likely.

    • Judih1

Dove gray would have been perfection

    • SoAnnaPropriate

Chicken cutlets as a design feature? Hells to the no.

    • grasshack

very pretty dress on her –
just those bra cups are too obvious

    • Call me Bee

      This is beautiful.

    • kimmeister

What a terrible choice of clutch color.

    • quiltrx

Something about the thinness/fineness of the fabric makes the nearly-overworked portions look thick, heavy, and wrong compared to the sheerer parts. Such an almost.

    • MilaXX

I was thinking pale blue like the dress Joanne Froggatt wore earlier, but soft gray works. I also think she is BEAUTIFUL! Seriously sigh worthy pretty.

    • Kelly

No, can’t like this. The cups make her breasts jut sideways in an odd way, and the folds look like those old, overdone pleated lampshades. Just too much visible infrastructure.

    • Krista Seidl

I think the issue is all in the separated cups. It makes it look like an unhooked bra, which isn’t helped by the color. It’s so close to being very pretty though.

    • http://victoriapavlova.com Victoria Pavlova

The color makes it look like the dress was previously white and went lying in the closet for 20 years and turned this shade

    • Julie Ann

Most bland thing I’ve ever seen her wear. She’s better than this.

    • Dan_In_NYC

Agree about grey, but the fit on this is pretty damn near perfect.

    • BLauDGaspode

Grey would have been so much better. This just reads old bandages to me.

    • holla

Is that a scar on her right boob?

    • webslice33

it’s her skin..she has gorgeous skin..

    • stonecoldcuddlewhore

It’s just so generic. I’m sure someone somewhere has worn this before.

    • housefulofboys

How to say this: I don’t like the dress or the color, but she looks stunningly beautiful in it. How does that work – it must be some sort of dark magic.

    • LibKat

Agree with all the hate-the-dress-but-she-looks-gorgeous comments. How does she do that and can she bottle this superpower? Her one boob looks like it’s making a break for it. Weird bodice = Zac Posen.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

I just don’t like seeing so much of the internal structure of the dress – without the visible bones and bra cups this would be so much better! I like the Uncles’ idea of dove grey too.

    • Indigo54

Zack would tear a PR contestant a new one for designing a dress like this. I love the bodice. The rest, not so much….well not at all.

    • Clash D

I’m not really feeling the eyeshadow here especially on the inner eye area, but other than that she looks lovely. Good choice of earrings. I wish this dress was in medium or light blue though.
