Liv Tyler in Stella McCartney at “The Leftovers” New York Premiere

Posted on June 24, 2014

Once again, Stella wanders into a craft store and winds up ruining a perfectly acceptable dress. Her staff needs to keep her away from the notions bins.

A fringed cross-body staircase. Yeah. That’s flattering. Let’s insert a random patch of skin, because nothing says sexy like a 2-inch wide strip running from your armpit to your stomach, amirite, ladies?

But hey, Lady Arwen’s still got it going on and she’s looking pretty good, despite the assiness of the dress she’s wearing. Love the makeup and earrings.

I don’t hate it on the model, but I don’t think that’s a dress that could work on anyone that has anything resembling a real body.

    • Sobaika

I would hate it less if there wasn’t that sheer bit peaking out.

    • rkdgal

Fringe in general is dicey, but that particular type of fringe always smacks of Party City Flapper Costume. No way to class that up.

      • FuhUgh

And the earrings play off of the craft store vibe – they look like something she beaded at home. So, yeah, that’s doesn’t exactly class it up either.

      • Bad Idea Jeans

I didn’t even NOTICE that it was a staircase of fruiting FRINGE. OMG. No no no no no.

      • MaggieMae

This is looking too much like hair for me.

    • JAL 512

“The leftovers” and the bargain bin fringe. Kind of goes together.

      • smayper

        FTW

    • @Biting Panda

Liv, my Love. It’s so nice to see you. Shame I have to unfocus my eyes, so that your dress is just a navy – ish swirl. Luckily I’m mesmerized by your eyes.

      • Sarah

She is sooo purty. I wish so much she wasn’t prey to McCartney’s influence. I shall pretend it is not the case.

        • Kayceed

The navy is so beautiful on her. Shame about the dress. And the local art fair earrings.

    • http://attiresmind.blogspot.com/ Kiltdntiltd

Why does McCartney’s work still get any attention whatever from the media? I’m scratching my head here.

      • Noah

        THE BEATLES!

        • http://attiresmind.blogspot.com/ Kiltdntiltd

Not good enough anymore, by a long shot.

          • Introspective

word. all stella’s stuff needs to be burned in effigy in the town square. seriously someone needs to shake this girl and tell her that she should find a hobby she’s actually good at.

            • demidaemon

She could make folksy art crafts. No one really cares if they are hideous or not. And she would have full access to her notions bin. WIN WIN!

      • Lori

She’s the design equivalent of being famous for being famous. Like Pairs Hilton with a sewing machine.

      • Gatto Nero

Gullible famous people are still wearing and being photographed in her clothes. There’s a head-scratcher.

      • boweryboy

The only excuse I can come up with is she’s resting on the laurels of her father’s name. Kind of like Paloma Picasso did in the ’80s (I think I was the only person back then who was underwhelmed by her jewelry).

        • http://attiresmind.blogspot.com/ Kiltdntiltd

Oh you aren’t alone. Every time I saw her work in the 80s I wondered what the fuss was about.

          • kmk05

Just saw her stuff in Tiffany’s! It’s nothing really special and she’s definitely cashing on the name.

        • Thomas

Her perfume is good though. My dad bought a bottle for my mom back in the 90s. I asked her if she thought it was any good recently, and she said that she liked it (and my mom doesn’t white lie to me).

          • Introspective

my mom and aunt used to rock the shit outta paloma’s perfume. totally brings back good memories when i smell it of them dressed to the nines on their way somewhere fancy when i was a kid. it does smell good…

      • Jackie4g

Perhaps, through channels more mysterious that we can divine, she’s got a little something on everyone in the publishing universe?

        • http://attiresmind.blogspot.com/ Kiltdntiltd

That’s an explanation I can understand, at least.

      • StarburstLady

I think she also hits of the note of some vague semblance of quirkiness for people who have no taste. She’s not actually innovative, but people who aren’t adventurous but wish they were see her stuff and think, “Oh, fringe that looks like it was chucked at the dress and happened to stick that way– that must be what people mean by ‘edgy’.”

        • Kayceed

Yes! I think some folks are confusing originality with eccentricity coupled with a lack of taste (Stella’s that is).

      • Glam Dixie

It’s like the emperor’s new clothes, everyone says they’re great so hey, they must be great. Bunch of lemmings.

    • Noah

      Liv, the Lovely Lopsided Lampshade.

      • http://attiresmind.blogspot.com/ Kiltdntiltd

I think I just fell in love with you a little.

    • James

Liv is just so beautiful that I am going to stare at her head and ignore the dress. It is far from a chore! Love the make up on her.

    • schadenfreudelicious

Peak a boo fringe flap?…yeah, no

    • AndieJay

I wonder if some women look at dresses like this one and see a challenge — “hell yes I can rock that!” Because there are so many beautiful, beautiful clothes out there, I can’t imagine another reason that a women would choose such garments.

    • Kate Andrews

Looks OK on the 10-year-old model. Sir Paul, can you do something?

      • myristica_fragrans

let’s keep it real, he’s already done enough.

    • Anna

I would rather scorch my own retinas than face all the ages of this world looking at any more Stella fringe.

      Her face is stunning though.

    • Danielle

Why do people continue to wear Stella’s designs? If we ignore the troll it will go away.

    • RescueMe23

Perhaps if people stopped wearing Stella’s clothes she’d get the message.

      • Jackie4g

Stella must have the world’s best public relations connections.

        • Shawn EH

Or she gives the most fun parties that all the girls want to go to.

        • myristica_fragrans

she seems to befriend celebs to get publicity for her designs. she’s been pulling that since ’97.

    • Alexis Wenceslao

      She looks great!

    • Diane Iafrate

she’s lovely, great makeup, nice earrings…the dress… that’s just yuck

      • evave2

Diane, you got it ALL right. I can deal with the fringe, it’s weird but even the weird sometimes get worn. But that slash of skin just looks awful. And the see-thru material looks downright poorly made.

        • Diane Iafrate

I am not sure why these girls keep picking Stella’s dresses…so many better options.

    • Capt. Renault

Shouldn’t armpit vents be on both sides?

    • myristica_fragrans

i’d like it better without the random sheer panel.

    • Denise Rambo

Somebody needs to tell her that IT’S SUMMERTIME! Dress appropriately!

    • mjude

liz looks great but the dress is awful. do not get stella designs.

    • Coolekat

that is the ugliest dress I have ever seen on this venue

      • decormaven

I concur. That item is headed to the Fugly Hall of Fame.

    • Jackie4g

“Who, besides celebrities at publicity events, actually wears this stuff ?” was my reaction. How is Stella still in business? Also, every single time a designer puts black and navy blue together, it brings a chorus of “how bold, how chic”, etc. So how come Uncles didn’t say that this time? Must be because it’s Stella. So I have mixed feelings. Yes I irrationally hate most of her stuff, but there is a certain inconsistency in the critiquing.

      • Kent Roby

Our Uncles agreed that it was a nice-enough dress until the trickery (the fringe and the ridiculous peep hole) ruined it.

        • evave2

Ok, but the shape of the dress is so standard. It is “nice-enough” but it is the same long-sleeved high-collared dress that was my standard job application dress back in the ’70’s. Nice-enough standard. But the fringe and the illusion netting just take it into a whole other category of bizarro. The only thing coming thru is Liv Tyler’s loveliness which the dress does not enhance at all. It’s not bold and chic (to quote Jackie4g) it’s just standard and then something something is added to give it “interest” but what the designer seems to glom onto for the “interest” is off-the-wall. I guess the irrational part of this is envy that a person gets a career and people (like me) cannot see “talent.” I sometimes get irritated with Marquesa — their stuff is just “too” BUT there is always a market for dresses that make women feel like pretty princesses. And there is nothing wrong with wanting to feel like a pretty princess every once in a while. Hell, I might want to feel that way sometimes TOO. So I can see the market AND I even respect that market. But this, I can’t. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE show her Resort 2015 collection. If only so I can snark on the shoes.

    • Kbear

Thanks for my new word of the day – assiness. I have to use it in several sentences now. Love Liv – hate – hate – hate the dress.

    • boweryboy

Can we launch a kickstarter campaign to pay Stella to never design again?

    • MilaXX

The random sheer cut out is hard enough to accept without adding the fringe-y rick rack.

    • In_Stitches

I actually like the dress, just not on her. It’s a tough dress to wear, broadening the wearer, but it has a dark drama to it that’s working for me. Slap it on Taylor Swift and I’d be in love.

    • BlairBear

It looks kinda cool on the model from the side

    • KinoEye

Simple and bold works best for Liv, I think. This dress would have been smashing on her if it was just color blocked navy and black. But no, Stella had to ruin it for us all with yet another trip to the notions bin. Any time Stella gets a notion about notions, she should slap herself repeatedly until she makes the association between notions and pain. Aversion therapy: Not just for bad psychiatrists in Texas.

      • Kathy

There went my coffee, but it was worth it!

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

      Her dress has the mange.

    • LadyVimes

That eye makeup is fierce. The dress looks like a table cover got into a fight with the window screen.

    • Shelby

I think she actually kind of pulls it off. She’s got enough of a quirky/retro feel to her looks that this kind of works. Almost.

      • Shawn EH

The colors are 100% right for her. She could do that gothic think that Laura Prepon keeps trying, without being scary or Jersey Wife about it.

        • Shelby

          Truth.

    • smayper

It’s the little….tail? hanging off the side of the dress that really made me laugh quietly in the library until I teared up. Brought it to the level of third grade animal costume! Bwahahahaha!!

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

She will always be THE it-girl from the 90’s to me.

      • kimmeister

For me she is one of the supposed IT girls who never panned out like their publicists hoped. Like Gretchen Mol.

        • Kitten Mittons

Yeah, me too. I never liked much of what she’s done career-wise. She is beautiful, though.

The 90’s It Girl for my money was Winona Ryder, but that’s my personal preference, and who was more influential on my little circle of friends.

          • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

I dig that. Winona, unlike Gretchen and Liv, had acting talent.

            • Kitten Mittons

Heh. Winona and Liv both embodied that 90’s feel, though, so I get what you’re saying.

As far as Gretchen goes, I liked her in Rounders and Donnie Brasco, but a million starlets could have played those roles. The only thing she’s done that is definitively hers (in my very very humble opinion) is Gillian Darmody on Boardwalk Empire. Bitch be crazy.

Side Note: I IMDB’d all of them to make sure I wasn’t talking out of my ass, which I do frequently (it’s a fun party game!). Comparatively, Winona had so many big movies that decade, from 1990 all the way through. I figured I just had a soft spot for her, but I was surprised at how much she actually did. And how little she’s done since….

        • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

The difference for me is that I have to think to recall what Gretchen Mol looks like. Liv’s look has always been unforgettable to me.

    • kipper

I dont mind the fringe, really – but it is the cut out that kills it – if this were in a much brighter / happier color , I think it could really be a knock out….

      • Wink

The dark colors make it look too fall/winter.

    • numenah

      I knew I shouldn’t have clicked.

    • Sophie

I’d like it more if there was a bit more space around the neck. It’s very top-heavy.

    • J.W.

The fringe looks like whale baleen.

    • suzq

If Liv Tyler can’t make your dress look good, your dress can’t look good.

    • Shawn EH

Goddammit, Stella! Liv did not deserve this!

    • ashtangajunkie

Even the great beauty of Liv cannot overcome the Stella.

    • Julie

How nice of Stella to give Liv the leftover trimmings from all her other dresses.

    • kmk05

      ARWEN DESERVES BETTER.

    • stubbornthoughts

That’s an awful, awful dress on a very beautiful woman.

    • http://www.bertkeeter.com Bert Keeter

      LAMPSHADE trim!

    • queeniethebold

Why. Why? Why do women keep wearing Stella McCartney’s dreck? It is always the worst. Always.

Liv Tyler is so beautiful and except for the dress she looks lovely. (Kind of a big “except for,” admittedly.)

    • marlie

Live looks beautiful from the neck up. She’s always been a favorite, so I’m glad to see her out and about, but it’s unfortunate that she’s doing it in this dress, because this is really unflattering.

    • Glam Dixie

I’m pretty sure that Stella’s “staff” is the only reason she manages to occasionally churn out a tolerable design. Liv is so gorgeous, she deserves better.

    • Emily Smith

Well now I want to marathon the movies again.

    • Ashleigh

      ridiculous

    • Cheryl

This is just weird, and not in a good, so crazy I love it kind of weird, but a mundane, stupid, boring kind of weird. But I guess that’s something, to be able to conceive of a dress that is both boring and bizarre, it’s really quite a trick. I have to say the woman wearing the dress is absolutely gorgeous.

    • fiddlecub

When does the moment come when people realize Stella is a talentless fraud? HOW DOES SHE GET SO MUCH WORK???

    • DeniseSchipani

I can probably find, if I look among the 70s family slides, photos of my homemade dance recital costumes, with the pinned-on fringe. Make that dress a leotard and you’ve got the idea. Stella is taking notes from Miss Susan’s School of Stage Dance, circa 1974.

    • Bexxx

She’s starting to look like dad, right?

    • Janet B

I like the model’s shoes and the blue on Liv.

    • uprightcitizen

That illusion panel is SO flattering. If the look you’re going for is graying, wrinkled, rib cage skin.

    • shopgirl716

The notions bins. I loved to dig in those as a kid, right after I played with the pink boas. Then I would peruse the pattern books while my mom took care of whatever she needed in the sewing store. You two make me smile every day.

    • BLauDGaspode

The power of Liv is not saving this Stella trainwreck. How can we petition the lady stars to just say “No”? We need a Nancy Reagan to sit them all down.

    • FibonacciSequins

Will someone who knows Stella please just tell her the truth for a change – that her designs are crap? Who the hell wants a line of fringe wriggling diagonally across her body?

Not digging the 70s blue eyeshadow, but otherwise I really like Liv’s makeup.

    • Anique Ashraf

how apt is the name of that show with this dress

    • Hetha Innis

How much must S.M. pay actresses to wear her clothes? It must be a lot because, well, the fug factor is overwhelming and undeniable.

    • Chaiaiai

That blue is the color of my wedding dress. That’s all:)

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Why did this dress ever see the light of day?

    • http://tvblogster.blogspot.com Boop

The dress doesn’t even make ME look good sitting at my desk looking at it. Very dark, muddy, mindless. I want to like Stella McCartney. But some of her stuff goes over my head.

    • d4divine

##assiness I will be using this hashtag in the future

    • PastryGoddess

      This shit cray..

    • bitchybitchybitchy

IF, and that’s a big if, Stella had not inserted the sheer body strip and that fugly fringe, this might have been a nice little dress. This, fellow BK’s, is what happens when a little girl tells her famous Dad that she really wants to be a designer someday….

      • Myra Amler

Oh yes, daddy indeed got her started, but can someone please explain WHY she is still in business and WHY celebrities continue to wear her????

        • bitchybitchybitchy

Good questions. Inquiring BK’s want to know.

    • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

      Damn it, Stella!

      • anyalama

Every damn time. Her designs just inspire a string of expletives from me…

    • http://www.readbarbara.com/ ReadBarbara

See, the dress ripped as she was getting out of the car, so the assistant ran into the bordello next door, denuded a lampshade then hot-glued that shit on on there while poor Liv was walking in. No one had the heart to tell her she missed a spot.

    • demidaemon

It’s horrible. Not really unexpected, considering the designer, but still horrible. As are the shoes on that poor model’s feet.

    • livesarah

That is a really, truly horrible dress.

    • Madam Von Sassypants

I read that as “fringed cross-body HAIRcase,” which is still absolutely true.

    • ktr33

      oof

    • Amel

oh gawd that’s awful. Only reason this isn’t inducing eye-vomit is because she’s so beautiful and that deep blue is all hers

    • Sweetvegan

I like the fringe, and like the idea of it covering a sheer strip. I just wish there were either more contrast between the blue and the black, or that the top and bottom were the same color. As it is, it looks more like a mistake.

    • JynxTheCat

Fcuk Stella McCartney – seriously. She only ever hit NOT HIDEOUS and that is only one out of every 207 frocks. Were her last name anything but she would have been lucky to pass Senior show. What a sham.
