Keira Knightley Style Double Shot

Posted on June 26, 2014

With celebrity style, sometimes you have to give people props for doing things most of us would consider no-brainers, like, say…

… lining a dress instead of going out and putting your underwear (or lack) on display. Attagirl, Keira. This appears to be a thing that’s hard to do for celebrities, so you deserve props.

Love every bit of this look. It’s almost like a parody of a Keira Knightley look; romantic to an almost absurd degree and striking at the same time, with almost no other styling. With Keira, it’s always about finding something really dramatic and well-suited to her – and then hanging it on her cheekbones. Hey, go with what works, we say. At least she’s not boring in the Angelina Jolie mode.

But this next one is a disappointment:

Maybe it suffers from the comparison to the first look, but this comes off heavy and shapeless. But this is a very rare instance of a model working a garment much better than Miss Keira. It turns into a different dress on her, which means Girl? That is NOT your dress. And it has nothing to do with size or shape, since Keira’s pretty much model-sized and model-shaped. It’s simply not a garment that plays to her strengths and she doesn’t seem to know what to do with it. It may have been helped by some un-Keira-like styling, since this isn’t quite a “hang it off your cheekbones” kinda look.

  • RussellH88

She looks great in the first look, but that second one looks like crumpled aluminum foil.

    • DuBey2

      I never really get Erdem.

      • FridaStaire

I thought I liked Erdem – till this!

    • Anna

Maybe I’m totally wrong, but I feel like the second dress probably looked really cool in person while on a rack – once on an actual body and with camera flashes it looks like my doggie-bag leftovers that are no longer shaped like a swan. The first dress is beautiful, simple, and sings on Keira.

  • Kristen

Keira, baby, you are forever my girl crush, and I adore you, but that second number is offensive to the eyes.

  • suzq

I thought you were going to have something to say about the white dress she wore on The Daily Show last night. That second dress needs pulled back hair and pulled back shoulders. And shoes that don’t make me wonder whether Sr. Alberta was right about shiny shoes reflecting up!

    • ballerinawithagun

    • JulieTy

AMEN to the shoulders! Why dies she hunch over all the time like that?

      • FrigidDiva

Is she taller? My sister is 5’11” and she hunches like that ALL the time because she’s self-conscious about her height. I wonder if that’s what Keira’s problem is or if she just has bad posture.

        • MarissaLG

Internet says she’s 5’7″. But still, even if she was tall, she’s got to have some kind of coach that would teach her how to stand up straight.

          • FrigidDiva

Very true. And it really does bug.

    • Ragnarockette

Yes, different posture, an updo, and maybe a belt (?) would have made the second look much better.

  • Anji Mertens

I don’t mind either dress, but am I the only one that wants to tell her to pull her shoulders back and stand up straight? These dresses require some posture!

    • Wink

You’re not the only one… she slouches a bit. But her face is gorgeous.

      • Anji Mertens

Yes, I agree she is gorgeous. I will always remember her in this green dress in Atonement, that was amazing. But she has an Audrey Hepburn vibe, and Audrey had such beautiful posture, everything looked that much better on her!

        • MoHub

Audrey Hepburn was a dancer, and it always showed.

        • bitchybitchybitchy

That green dress in Atonement was so gorgeous, and suited Keira so well.

        • greymain

    • kimmeister

I find that everything looks better with good posture!

    • Lilithcat

I just want to put a book on her head.

    • sundaynightaddict

Totally agree – the second dress isn’t working because she’s not working it.

  • NBG

The second look would only work in floor-length on a fantasy television show. Since everything that works on Keira is period drama, you have a mismatch.

  • She is my fashion blind spot. Like, if we were hanging out before she left and she put on a nude, patent leather shoe, nude lip and a Stella McCartney jumpsuit, I would turn my head and whisper, “….go.” I would be a terrible friend.

    • demidaemon

I assume the SM jumpsuit would have a lot of unnecessary detritus attached to it that you somehow willingly ignored.

You’re right you would be a terrible friend. 🙂

      • Alloy Jane

Unnecessary Detritus should be the name of Stella’s clothing line.

        • demidaemon

          I thought it was?

Or is that just the invisible subtitle?

  • Thomas

The second dress looks frumpy and wrinkled on Keira. I think it might be partly due to her posture (or lack of). First dress is gorgeous.

  • Denise Rambo

I want to tell her to STAND UP STRAIGHT!

  • Noah

The first is gorgeous; the second is a crumpled Hershey’s wrapper.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

I agree. That second dress is crappy. It is no one’s dress.

      • decormaven

With shiny gold shoes. The horror….

    • Terri Ellis

The first dress just makes me think “Put a bird on it, and it’s art!”

  • Glam Dixie

Love the first dress on her, the second one looks like the tin foil that’s been in the bottom of my oven for a while. I always get her confused with Natalie Portman.

    • Aidan B

Well, she did play Natalie’s decoy queen in Star Wars (ashamed that I know this).

      • FibonacciSequins

        That was Keira?

        • KinoEye

Twas indeed. One of her first roles in a major project, I think.

          • Alloy Jane

No way! I never realized that…

    • Sarah

This was a major problem for me, too, until I realized one of em’s British. Makes it easier.

  • hughman

You gotta love a dress that looks like you could attend a cocktail party on the Sun.

    • @Biting Panda

Deep space is exactly where my mind went. NASA Chic.

    • KateShouldBeWorking

I feel like there is a hubba hubba-Hubble joke here but I can’t quite find it.

    • Little_Olive

Sandra Bullock should have ordered the long version of the Oscars. Hell, even for the movie instead of those skimpy shorts and tank top they had her wear to remind us that depressed scientist ladies can still be hot.

  • What kills that second look dead is the hair. An updo and this might have gone a few steps towards working. But here she’s covering one of the essential elements of the dress – showing off her shoulders – with foufy hair.

And because of that, when I go back to the first look and see the hair, I wish that had been an updo too. Her hair is competing with embroidered birds. Nobody wins that battle, Keira. 🙂

    • Darcy H

Shoulda read comments before posting, totally agree that an updo would have saved the second look!

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Now that you mention it, an updo with the Valentino would have been a better choice, and you are 100% right: no one is going to win with embroidered birds, particularly when they are part of a couture look. That’s world class embroidery, folks.

    • demidaemon

Agree about the hair. It is doing less than nothing in both looks.

  • @Biting Panda

Love the first dress, make up, etc. Wishing for better posture, as is usually the case with Keira.
Hate the second dress with the burning of a thousand suns, which is unfortunate, because this think looks highly flame retardant.

  • J.W.

Stand up straight, pull your hair back or up so one may see the shoulder detail, and change your shoes.

  • Monkey Toe

The second dress looks like it should come with a side of sour cream. And who thought armpit cutouts would be a good idea?

    • BLauDGaspode

The armpit cutouts are necessary to keep her from drowning in her own sweat. Tin foil chafes something awful I hear, too.

  • Mona_Visa

Perhaps if we swept her hair up & back for that second look it would feel less gravity-bound.

    • Aidan B

Came here to say the same thing. An updo would have gone a long way towards saving that look.

  • BLauDGaspode

I was afraid Keira was involved in some kind of accident, I mean, since she’s wrapped in one of those emergency blankets. Poor dear.

    • Alyssa

Maybe she just ran a marathon?

      • Erica

Bingo! I’ve been handed something very similar to that dress at a few finish lines.

  • Imasewsure

That second dress is definitely interesting on the model. GTNYD… and can we get some different hairdos too? Not just for Ms Keira but for all of the ladystars “rocking” this limp and stringy style? It bugs

  • mmebam

I mean, if I were a model, I would have resting bitch face as well if I were given half a dress such that my breasts were hanging out all the time.

But that is neither here, nor there. Keira looks lovely.

  • Kayceed

That first dress – just what one needs for the posh dinner in an English manor following the shooting party. I mean, these events do exist, don’t they?

  • Gatto Nero

The first dress is perfection on her — and much more effective lined, no matter who’s wearing it.
The second one just looks shapeless and unfocused — partly the fit, but mostly GTNYD.

  • Dino Bonačić

Just ‘hung out’ with her recently (not really with her, but aside of her) for a few days on the island of Hvar in Croatia where she supported her b-friend. Bottom line – she’s extremely style-less and quite rude (didn’t want to take pics with other fans that approached her). Bottom bottom line – right now very high on my hate-list.

That aside, the first look is very pretty (yes, just pretty), and what bugs me with the second look is the hair. WHY WHY WHY put that hair with that dress. I know it was the same day but she should have got her hair in a top-knot or a high pony-tail or just save that one for another occasion and put on something simple…

  • BlairBear

Those arm holes on the second aren’t on the model dress . Also hair up I think

  • Little_Olive

I LOVE that Valentino dress. I wasn’t sure at first but now I think it’s all kinds of ladylike, fun and elegant.

The second would be much, much better without the Kelly Kapowsky shoulder+armpit treatment. It’s a bit too bunchy, anyways.

    • kimmeister

Upvote for the first “Saved by the Bell” reference I’ve ever seen here!

  • alyce1213

I like the first look. As stated, it’s nearly a parody of herself, but it just works.
The second dress photographs poorly, like tinfoil, but I bet the fabric is really beautiful in person. Not for summer — for a Christmas party. And no armpit slits. I like that silhouette on her.
    Her hair is always hanging.

  • MilaXX

Homerun on the first look. Huzzah for her lining it and making it work. Second look was awful on the model and doesn’t fair much better on Keira. Bless her for trying, but NO.

  • Kristi Mitchell

The second dress probably wouldn’t look half as bad on her if she didn’t look so miserable wearing it. She must have known it was not her dress.

  • Darcy H

Honestly she could work the second one if she stood up straight and pulled her hair back, it’s ruining the line of the dress.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

That Valentino looks so much better with the lining;you can really see and appreciate the embroidery against the lining. The second dress just doesn’t play to Keira’s strengths.

  • girliecue

    1st dress: Oh baby!
    2nd dress: Oh honey….

  • Pit vents. I think her sloppy hair and posture are letting it down. Hair up, shoulders back, and it could have been something.

  • AndieJay

It would have been vastly improved IMO if she’d worn her hair up.

  • Nancer

I think the second dress could work if she pulled her hair up – the elegance of this dress is in the neckline, and her hair obscures that.I also think that if she were posed differently, this would be really striking on her. As it is, the hair and the arms by her side make it look like she is sagging.

    • Nancer

ALSO – the second dress is just to big on her! Look at the length of the sleeves and skirt… this needed some alterations.

  • LadyVimes

The first is pretty, but I don’t like the sleeves. They look too big for her.
The second one has armpit vents (at least that’s what they look like), which is…gross.

  • AnaRoW

The first dress is much improved with the lining. I like the second dress but off the shoulder doesn’t go with her tendency to slouch.

  • marlie

I think Kiera looks gorgeous in the first dress. It’s beautiful on her and it suits her. And the lining actually accentuates the embroidery detail on the dress.

The second dress is not her dress. I don’t think it’s anyone’s dress. It looks like crinkled up aluminum foil. It also looks too heavy and wintery.

    • Mr. J.

It also looks like it’s falling off her.

  • jonnyf8

wow her head is huge!!! I know they say that about most celebrities, but her’s really stands out in these pictures. Fortunately it is one gorgeous head!!

  • Danielle

  • ashtangajunkie

The Valentino dress is absolutely gorgeous and I very much appreciate the decision to line it. The second dress is ugly. Putting her hair in a chignon might have helped the overall look, but I don’t think anything could help that dress.

  • kimmeister

Wait a sec, at first I thought the first dress had the lining sewn into it, but now it looks like it’s basically a blue full slip with tiny beige straps.

  • Sam Smith

First dress is so striking, but I really wish she would put a smidge of effort in on the styling.

  • queeniethebold

    Her hair looks terrible.

  • sagecreek

Did any of you see her on Daily Show last night? WTF was that? Sister Wife #5?

  • Glammie

Love the first dress–now, why can’t Angelina figure out that this is the way to do it?

Wonder if the second dress looks better in person–the fabric photographs horribly, can’t get any sense of it.

  • FibonacciSequins

But even the inferior second look isn’t horrible. I think it would look better if she weren’t slouching and had pulled her hair up. The loose hair works better with the first look. Romantic-and modest!

  • nannypoo

She looks like she got caught in the rain in the second look, and her hair is awful in both, but that first dress is gorgeous.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

First picture -Wow, that Valentino dress, how elegant. What a great dress. And standing right in front of the “Budweiser – The King of Beers” logo. LOL.

  • KinoEye

If I recall correctly, a kitten — or perhaps the uncles — pegged that first dress for Knightley when the collection was released. It is absolutely her dress. That other one… oh, honey, NO.

  • greymain

    just FIX YOUR HAIR girl!

    • Shawn EH

True, but the second dress is also pretty fug.

  • Terri Terri

    the Budweiser logo is focus-pulling!

  • CPK1

I love Keira’s look and she is definitely someone who can go where mere mortals fear to tread. The first look is divine but the second look is hideous and the shoes are even worse

    • ktr33

      SUCH terrible shoes.

  • Lilithcat

I wish her hair weren’t so droopy-looking. And she should learn to stand up straight.

  • Yoshio

all of it would benefit from proper posture

    • semirose

I just watched her recent Daily Show interview and I wanted her to sit up straight so bad!

  • unbornfawn

I with TLo wanting to give Keira props for lining the dress! Thank you Ms. Keira for that. The first look is definitely better. I’m not a fan of all the dark eye make-up.

  • Diane Iafrate

I mean her makeup and hair are just too perfect. gorgeous.. I don’t hate the second dress so much…I bet it looked kinda interesting in person.

  • ktr33

LOVE the first dress and look. Dress #2: she’s wearing it 4″ longer than the model, why? That’s part of what’s making it seem so heavy. But regardless, the materials looks like brocade made from scrunched up tinfoil. Or, like a jiffy-pop foil ball.

  • demidaemon

I don’t like either. The first is just enh to me (hair is a major detracting factor here) and the second is just a crumpled up nothing on her.

    • Magatha

I agree. I’m totally in the minority here in disliking the first dress. I think it is much improved by the lining, but it still seems dowdy and itchy looking to me.

      • demidaemon

It’s definitely improved by the lining. Agree on the dowdy points. KK is also not giving it any oomph, either.

  • SophieCollier

I dunno, I think she could have done well in the second dress if she’d pulled her hair up and done some glitzy eyeshadow.

  • Sophie

Love the bird appliqués on the blue background.

  • andi56

In the second one, it looks like she’s slouching like an addict, waiting for her next fix. Maybe it’s a new look: addict chic.
I highly recommend “Begin Again,” though! It’s a sweet movie, made even sweeter by Ruffalo.

  • drdirection

It’s all ruined for me with her ridiculous duck lips

  • SuzyQuzey

The first dress is lovely. The hair is just sad.

  • Jecca2244

i don’t think she did justice to the 2nd dress!

  • Alloy Jane

I miss her short hair. Anywho, dig the first look but that second one? Crumply dress with dead gold fish. No thanks.

  • Wadwell Burns

    Stand up straight, dammit.

  • jilly_d

    Irrational love.

  • MissusBee

The Erdem on the model looks great as it’s immaculately fitted and wrinkle free (I imagine relatively easy to do as she just has to walk up and down then take it off again). Keira is slouching a bit, plus has probably moved in it. I think the shape of the dress is good for her, but your eye just sees crumpled baking foil. Dishevelled hair not helping.
The Valentino is dreamy and beautifully made, but I think it would sing more on someone with a teensy bit less angular physique – or maybe it’s just a posture thing again. Also can’t escape from the thought that some damsel in the Seven Kingdoms wants it back.

  • siriuslover

Love the first gown and I think a lot of the problem with the second is the location of the picture, because we get no sense of the dress.

  • Mothra

Second look turns her into Frumplestiltskin. Hey, howabout posture maybe? It is not attractive and she is not attractive in it. The first look is nice and the blue liner is perfect.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

The model in the first look is SHOWING HER BIG WHITE GRANNY PANTIES! How can she not know that BWGPs are for private viewing + comfort?
