Johnny Depp at the “Transcendence” Los Angeles Premiere

Posted on April 11, 2014

When it comes to male stars, it’s a tossup as to whether we give the most grief to Robert Downey, Jr. or Johnny Depp. Lately, Depp has been disappointing us on an epic scale. That last outfit actually made us angry.

But our hearts are full of love this morning.

Johnny-Depp-Transcendence-LA-Premiere-Tom-Lorenzo-Site-TLO-1Johnny Depp attends the premiere of “Transcendence” at the Regency Village Theatre in Westwood, California.

We still don’t like his personal style. We can’t stand those shoes at all and we hate the crap he’s always got dangling off his neck, especially if he insists on unbuttoning 3 shirt buttons and sporting sunglasses on the red carpet. It all comes off a little sleazy. But he didn’t put on 40 rings or tie a scarf around his wrist or wear some sort of goofy-ass hat or an outfit so retro it looks like it came from a costume shop, so this is nothing but a huge improvement, as far as we’re concerned. The jacket’s nice and he looks polished and put together. We’re always saying that stars who have problems doing the red carpet thing should take their personal style and upscale it for the RC. This is a classic example. That the style is not our taste is mostly irrelevant. He pulled it together and he looks comfortable with the results. That’s good enough for us.

I’m always a sucker for a pocket square. He looks so much better than the last few outings.

  • majorbedhead

It’s giving me the serious sads that Johnny Depp has morphed into sleazy drunken uncle that everyone avoids at weddings.

    • Judih1

Me too. He used to be so hot! Wonder if living in France wasn’t good for him?

      • AnaRoW

I think it’s a combination of age and his wannabe rock-star-itis. I saw a pic of Kiss at the HoF ceremony and they all look like some version of this.

      • alyce1213

One would think that living in France would up his style. Didn’t happen.

    • VicD

It’s that Bulgarian pimp facial hair that ruins him for me.

    • Trent

Yeah, not getting the love for this. IMO he looks like a VHS porn producer at the AVN Awards in 1985. And the cut of that jacket gives him chunk that he doesn’t have IRL. And the greasy hair…ugh.

  • Victoria Anzalone

    Well said!

  • mcbishop

    The bar is so low……

  • jilly_d

That’s a great jacket but man, those necklaces bug.

    • Candigirl1968

      Baby steps.

    • what not

Yeah, I was vaguely on board with the rest of the outfit, but in the close-up he looks like he should be selling jewelry on a blanket to backpackers.

    • Jecca2244

they look like what you win from those machines with a claw at the mall.

  • Constant Reader

I like this. it’s cheesy, but sort of charmingly cheesy. Like if I sat next to him in the theater, he’d turn to me and say “How do you like my lounge singer jacket?” I guess I’m saying that I’m giving him a pass for seeming to be in on the cheesiness. Apparently, I prefer intentionally silly to delusionally silly.

    • Pennymac

“intentionally silly to delusionally silly” You nailed it. What has bugged me so much about the epic fails of his last RC attempts has been that delusional “this makes me look good” shite.

This is still silly, (necklaces and shoes, anyone?) but it looks like he’s in on the joke.

  • FrigidDiva

He totally looks like a Vegas lounge lizard, but it is an improvement from the grandpa pants from the other day. I can not, however, sign off on that hair. It looks like he got into the black boot polish before he left the house.

  • Danielle

The shoes are offensive but it’s such an improvement over last time I’ll give it a pass.

  • flamingoNW

I suppose I can live with it, but yeah… Hate the necklace, glasses and shoes…

  • CT14

That jacket is kind of perfect for this movie premiere. It looks 3d and techno.

He’s doesn’t look grubby, either. Good job, Jump Street.

    • RidgewayGirl

He may not look grubby, but he did overdo the product in his hair. It looks sticky.

  • SugarSnap108

Yep, for him, this is good. I remember when I used to gaze at him in the pages of Tiger Beat and Wow! and think he was soooo dreamy. Ah well.

  • BendinIntheWind

Good god I LOVE that jacket so much.

    • B_C_J

We will have to fight for it then. 🙂

  • Capt. Renault

I would give him a 21 Jump Street shoot-the-bird handshake for that.

  • Janet B

    Most improved, bravo.

  • MilaXX

eh, still a little costumey and douchey to me. I like the jacket and I like the creepers. I do not like this outfit put together as it is. I guess points much be given for looking like he took a bath recently and everything fitting.

  • Sarah

Ah, but the douchey sunglasses MATCH the jacket 😉

  • Glam Dixie

He does look very much improved, but I still don’t like it. Man, he’s in love with those Creepers isn’t he? They seem like a much younger crowds shoe. Maybe he’s wearing Transition lenses and they get darker because of the flashes. They don’t look much like sunglasses, but they aren’t regular lenses either. It’s weird. Also, he needs to rethink the hair style, it’s not really doing him any favors.

    • Celticharpist

Yes, he seems to have superglued his feet into those shoes. I don’t think we’ve seen him in another shoe for while — every TLO Depp post recently have had him wearing them.

  • conniemd

I like everything but the greasy hair look. Best he’s looked in a while. Shows you can be funky in your style, but still dress up for the red carpet without losing your inner craziness.

  • cocohall

Sadly a switch has flipped in my brain when it comes to Mr, Depp where I can no longer see anything but the egregiously bad elements of whatever he is wearing. This might be a skosh better than the moth-eaten hat, but the distinctive scent of Eau de Douche lingers. He is so talented it makes me sad to see him like this. He does not need all the frippery – vest, pocket square, necklace, tinted shades, etc.

    • demidaemon

I’m at the same point in general, except I can’t even work up the vitriol to criticize the specifics.

  • decormaven

This is a thought-out outfit, specifically chosen to go with the venue. See how the jacket picks up the blues in the poster shown behind him? Also, it is as the dear uncles describe- it’s Johnny’s style, just kicked up a notch. Good job, team- just see that further public appearances for this flick are as equally as thought out.

  • B_C_J

I love this jacket especially because it is set off wonderfully with the vest & the crisp white shirt with a collar that is somehow being controlled without visible buttons. The shoes are one of his idiosyncrasies. I accept them because they work for him. My one issue is his hair. Men have to be very careful when coloring their hair. It looks very artificial when it’s so obviously dark & their age would indicate that one should have some grey. A little less product would also have been good.

    • Grumpy Girl

Yes that hair is so much darker than his eyebrows, too. Or a different, unnatural shade I should say. Personally, I have a thing for guys with grey hair, but I realize he may not share that preference for himself.

      • jady

He dyed his hair because he was sporting a horrible blonde hair after his last character in the movie “Mortdecai”, so i don’t judge…the blonde was terrible!

        • alyce1213

But — he should know better than to dye his hair (what looks like home job) one flat, too-dark color. There are professionals for that, who know how to get shades in hair to look real. He can afford it.

    • littlemac8

I thought the uncles would be please with the collar standing up so nicely!!

  • NMMagpie

    Definitely some Goodfella-vibe going on.

  • Kristin

He looks like he doesn’t smell here! Baby steps!

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

      Now THAT’s a ringing endorsment.

  • mjude

I cant help it, I love the shoes

    • random_poster

      I do, too.

  • alyce1213

It’s better than the other day, I’m not that nauseous, but I still don’t care for it. It’s try-hard and costumey. It’s not that I dislike the shoes, they’re fine to kick up a plainer outfit, but when he wears them with all the wind chime accessorizing, jacket, shades, etc., it’s too much, gilding the lily.

  • Sam Smith

The jacket is lovely and he at least looks like he’s had a shower in the last week, so win. If he would shave, burn those shoes (is he compensating for height?), switch out the necklace, it would be a full on win for him. I don’t mind the sunglasses this time around.

  • holla

only thing I’d asked for a trim of his facial hair to keep it neat.

  • marlie

That jacket is really gorgeous, and I like the shoes (with this outfit, for him). I almost don’t mind the wind chimes around his neck because everything else is mostly on point.

The sunglasses are dumb, and I wish he’d wash his hair and shave that goatee, though.

  • msdamselfly

    sOooo bad
wash your hair, get outside more and think good thoughts

  • He still has quite the face. Pleeease, my kingdom for a razor and a shave and getting that little lawn off his face.

  • Chuck Barthelme

I covet that jacket. And I like the idea of the look if he just polished it up a bit. Those pants are kind of big on him, and I agree on the jewelry- it’s kind of outdated and it seems like he’s trying to hard to hold onto a younger version of himself.

    • Chuck Barthelme

Also, is it a trick of the unbuttoned-ness of the shirt, or is that collar WAY to high. That’s probably also not helping with the looking dated version of himself. He needs to narrow down the collar a bit.

  • Toby Wollin

This is about as close to a hipster tux as I’ve ever seen on him. The jacket is cool, great color, interesting weave, This is about as subtle as we’ve ever seen him.

  • ashtangajunkie

That is some scraggly-ass facial hair, but his jacket is lovely. I feel like we’re almost getting somewhere.

  • Patrick Cleary

    That jacket is awesome.

  • Hristina Doesntlikeyou

He definitely hates getting old, that “necklace” is very ’97 (ironically the kind of stuff he wouldn’t wear back in the late 90s)

  • Kayceed

The wind chime analogy is so spot on because – aside from the visuals – I always assume there is a clattering, clinking, rattling sound as he moves about in his finery. Whenever he is featured, I HEAR HIM. And yes, it is creepy.

  • latina fey

i think i’m the only one that likes the shoes, BUT the rest of him always looks so awful, i can’t sign off on them (on him). this is the best he’s looked in a while. echoing what everyone else keeps saying, what the HELL happened?? he was so incredibly gorgeous and now even thinking that makes me feel like i need to shower. ugh.

  • judybrowni

    Still fairly douchey.

  • KinoEye

Much better… but sad that we’re grading Johnny Depp on a curve now. Teenage me longs for the days of Edward Scissorhands and Gilbert Grape.

    • formerlyAnon

Jesus god, he used to be hot. *Sigh* Such is the natural progression between 20 and 50, BUT he could still be hot if only he’d take a different tack.

      • KinoEye

Exactly. He could turn into the foxiest of silver foxes, if he made some changes. But right now, we’ve got creepy drunk uncle at the wedding, as another kitten said above.

    • alyce1213

I really wish he’d WITFU — JUST ONCE, for us, so we could see the Johnny Depp we used to know, under all that affectation and cheesy crap. Then we could set the curve back to normal. I love how he looked in the “Donnie Brasco” days, too.

  • boweryboy

What is wrong with him? He gets skeevier and skeevier with every public appearance. He used to be so pretty – not my type but I could appreciate it. At least this get-up is put together skeevy, but skeevy nontheless.

    • IMNAngryLiberal

I used to have a major crush on him and he was most definitely MY type…so you know it hurts me to say that he now comes off like that creepy uncle that you try to keep your kids away from (are you listening to me, Amber Heard’s parents?).

  • Imasewsure

I agree with the Attaboy… RDJ tries to look like a boy which is why he bugs me so much. Ancient Gay Windchime Depp is going for some sort of Douglas Fairbanks/David Niven look here and I’m fine with it. Much improved but still his thang… Attaboy

    • formerlyAnon

Douglas Fairbanks/David Niven is eerily dead on!

    • alyce1213

I totally get what you’re on to — the Fairbanks/Niven vibe — but I don’t think it succeeded. I’m more familiar with Niven, who was always impeccably, beautifully dressed and groomed. If Johnny really pulled off something like that, just for a change, we’d probably die from how gorgeous.

  • CeeQ

As I told the BKs last night….my comment from now on re Johnny Depp will just be “WHY?!?!?”
Today’s look is not changing my stance.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Yes, I will join in the Attaboy for Johnny. Given the last wince-inducing outfit, this is a big step up.

  • Matthew Davie

It’s light-years better than what he typically wears. But the “Ducky from Pretty In Pink” shoes make me groan.

  • Jacob Bowen

I will concede that the clothing is BEAUTIFUL. I love that jacket, and I even like his pocket square. I also believe that if the glasses weren’t tinted I would even think his face looked great.

  • lunchcoma

I’m still embarrassed by him and by my former lust for him (what were you THINKING, 15-year-old lunchcoma?), but that is a good jacket for him and I appreciate that he toned down his wind chime tendencies.

  • butterflysunita

Very sleazy. Looks like a pick-up artist. It’s an outrage that someone so good-looking and talented has to go around looking like this.

  • formerlyAnon

    Good jacket.

  • Morales Mike

That jacket is beautiful but I’m surprised no one said it makes him look a little thick, at least in that first picture. But yeah, the hair is what’s the problem now and up close you can see how dark it’s dyed especially since at the sides/temples you can see the lighter (grey?) roots. I personally think he’d look great with shorter and perhaps salt & pepper hair.

  • Shawn EH

I like the idea of turning up your personal style even for the RC; sadly, he’s convincing me more and more those shoes have an age limit and he (and I) are past it. 🙁

  • mrslilypond

if you are going to sport facial hair….keep it trimmed…that is all.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

  • DisMcK

I love Johnny and I think he looks good here (compared to some recent efforts). It seems unlikely that he will ditch the wind chime look so how does he update his preferred style? I guess it a question of how does one age gracefully and retain a connection with your (much younger) sartorial self?

  • MartyBellerMask

I sincerely hope he has a few pairs of those shoes. Because if he’s just wearing that one pair EVERYWHERE, EVERY DAY, then they must smell pretty awful. Stank Creepers.

  • MartyBellerMask

    I love the jacket though.

  • Lilithcat

Just so you know: after your comments last night about how few hits your posts on male celebrities get compared to those on female celebrities, I am going to make a concerted effort to up your numbers.

  • littlevase

He just looks too Try Hard. Everything he wears comes across as too costumey.

  • TwiddlyStun

Ah, the very definition of damning with faint praise.

  • Kathy

He looks happier in these pics, which goes a long way to improving his appearance. I don’t mind the sunglasses, hair product, etc., but these shoes are getting old.

  • If he’d lose the necklace and the glasses, he could look quite dapper here. As it is, at least he doesn’t look like he’d jangle when he moves.

  • largishbearishAtlish

wow. love the jacket. (and something I never say. ever) and as dorky as the shoes are, I think they work (okay, for him, for this look, for this moment, only).

  • ShaoLinKitten

Is that a stylized sperm cell he’s got on his pendant?

  • Sunraya

I always thought he was beautiful. Now I think he is usually dirty, as in, not clean. Yeech.

  • lynnlee

I think he should get a pass for the sunglasses- those blue lenses are prescribed for certain vision problems and migraines. What I can’t figure out is how his jacket made him look paunchy. Isn’t he really slender?

  • Joanna

Love the jacket. LOVE LOVE LOVE the glasses (maybe I’m the minority there, haha). I think he looks great (again, I’m probably in the minority, lol).

  • Aidan B

Oh thank GOD. I was so distressed after that last post. This is still typically off-kilter but at least everything fits here and looks clean.

  • BrooklynBomber

But the hair, for God sake. Why, Johnny Depp, why?

  • Hildegerd Haugen

  • Columbinia

I’m seeing retro lounge singer or John Waters imitator but without the irony. Maybe Depp’s trying to do a 1950s cross of Elvis and Robert Goulet. Whatever, it’s all trying too hard and the sleaze frosting on top is too much. This is what a lizard might look like if given human form for a day. But Depp seems to be enjoying himself.

  • Baghag

You should see his teeth. They are gross! Like nasty smoker brown gross….

  • plkweg

He seems to be trying a little harder lately. I suspect he is just too weird to care or get it right. However, he is still quite beautiful.

  • quiltrx

LOVE that jacket! From the waist up, I totally see this as Johnny’s take on Vincent Price Realness…and I heartily approve.
(Seriously, mentally put an ascot where the necklaces are, and you’ll see what I mean)

  • Gatto Nero

    Well done, JD.
And I’m loving the “Attaboy” from the uncles for this!

  • m3grrl

The jacket reminds me of Armani. It would look great on a woman in a business meeting or in court. On Depp, he just looks hippy. Not hippie. Hippy.

  • colorjunky

Are we sure he’s not gay?

    • demidaemon

He has multiple children, so he’s probably not gay.

      • colorjunky

        I was joshing!

        • demidaemon

Ah! The written word doesn’t always impart sarcasm well. 😉

  • demidaemon

I guess it’s okay. I’m not really feeling him at all at the moment, so any objectivity I had is pretty much dead and buried. Enh.

  • lillyvonschtupp

It’s the best he’s looked in a while.

  • Lattis

We’re always saying that stars who have problems doing the red carpet thing should take their personal style and upscale it for the RC

I can’t help but hope I never have to do a RC event since I fear there is no upscale version of sweat pants and tee shirt. Now I has a sad.
