In or Out: Emma Watson at Harry Potter NY Premiere

Posted on July 12, 2011

We think Hermione is giving us the finger, you guys.

Emma Watson attends the “Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2″ New York Premiere in a Bottega Veneta Fall 2011 gown.

Because we recently got all up in her face because we thought she was in a style rut and the cute little Rosemary’s Baby getups were getting old. We told her to start looking into sultrier looks and maybe turning the makeup dial past “Fresh and Clean” occasionally. Certainly, this has the luxe, grownup look we were thinking of; it’s a gorgeous dress. But we do have to point out that the bodice looks a skosh too tight on her and we’re not really loving the slicked-up boyhair with this look. But what really got our notice was her makeup, which looks like she turned the dial past “Fresh and Clean” and all the way up to “Cher.” That is a whole lot of eye makeup going on there. In other words, she just may have gone a little too far in the other direction, at least with the eye makeup. It’s just not working, this combination of sleek hair, pale lips, and disco eyes. We like the dress but we’re not crazy about the face.

VOTE NOW!

IN! It’s grownup, sophisticated and a little sexy!

OUT! She looks like a fashion doll with a mismatched head!

Zoe Saldana’s poorly accessorized attempt at old-school romance was voted an IN by confused minions with poor eyesight.

I’d say a tentative IN, because she’s experimenting and all-in-all, I think she looks good. I also have seen other pics of her in this and the makeup didn’t look quite so severe. Proud of her for trying something new and dramatic! Plus, the hair doesn’t really bother me, since she’s in the awkward spot of trying to grow out her pixie cut while very much in the spotlight. Go Hermione!

    • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

Uh, OUT. Hate the dress, hate the make-up.

    • Anonymous

Out.  That’s a lot of dress and eye stuff going on and she doesn’t look at all like she’s sure about it.  This is one of those looks that is carried entirely by attitude, and that girl’s shoulders don’t say “I like what I’m wearing”.  And she’s not a perpetual sloucher, so it’s got to be the dress.

      • http://twitter.com/Hussified Coleen D. Wybranski

What Peggy said. She looks overwhelmed by the dress. I would have preferred to see her in this Fall 2011 Jean-Paul Gaultier if she wanted to get away from her image: http://tinyurl.com/6dfb3z7

IN – i like the hair, the makeups a tad too far, but I saw an interview where she said it had gold leaf on it.  But I think theres a ton of drama and I love it.

    • Anonymous

That’s the same dress you covered in the Downton Abbey comments late last week. And to prove how much I’ve grown in all things TLO and fashion, I never even knew about Downton Abbey before that spread and STILL not only remembered the dress but where I saw it. Be afraid–be very afraid.
Beyond that–I’m not crazy about the dress but Emma sure did some growing up over the weekend. And the eyes–no worse than many.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

      IN.

The dress is a skosh rumpled, but she still looks gorgeous and sophisticated. Love the hair, and even the super-heavy eye. The boys in their tuxes still sometimes look like they’re playing dress-up, but she certainly doesn’t.

Oddly I do not mind the slick down hair.  I am thinking it is because the top of the dress is very fitted and not poofy.  The eye makeup is a bit strong, but I think she definitely is IN

    • http://joansbooks.blogspot.com/ lilithcat

“A” for effort, but, frankly, I don’t like the dress – not on her, and probably not on anyone.  The material of the bustier looks like brown denim, and the skirt, while I love the luxe fabric and color, looks at the hip like a toolbelt. I keep wondering where the hammer and wrench are.

IN!!! As a person with short hair, you basically only have 2 styles you can turn to, the slick back boy hair, or the flowing freely, which just looks like you didn’t do anything. And I don’t think you two understand how hard it is to make it look like you have eye makeup on without overdoing it. Its hard. Anyway, she is ROCKING it!

      • lilibetp

I’ve seen short styles with curls or hair jewelry or with bangs or something that doesn’t make it look like she stepped out of the shower and discovered she didn’t have time to fix her hair AND put on makeup.

        • Daniele Paulding

I have a very similar haircut to Emma’s, and I agree with Lauren Jean–it’s very hard to make hair that length look “fancy” whether or not your hair is curly. Its also much harder to make hair that short look good curled, and not poodle-y. The slick is classic and looks great on her.

          • Anonymous

Easy to slip into either too young or too old looking with short hair too. I think the slicked back hair works well on her.

    • Terence Ng

I’m willing to give her an IN because the make up look is so intense that, good or bad on a regular basis, it stands out as a look for this specific event. Her other cast mates fade into obscurity of tuxes and sensible dresses.

But, she’s really not selling the dress based on how gorgeous that other model is making the front part seem.  On her, it looks like it’s barely clinging with safety pins.

      Mmm…..tiny “in”…becauseIloveHermoineandit’sthelastfilmandnowthere’snothinggoodtolookforwardtoinlifeanywhereever…

LOL, I am totally with your “becauseIloveHermione” line.

Also, BIG IN as far as I’m concerned.  In a red carpet interview she said she was traditional and safe for the London premier and wanted to push the envelope and get edgy in New York.  Girl knocked it out of the park.

I’m not really sure what else she could have done with her hair at that length, and I think the bodice looks a lot better on Emma than on the fake-boobed model.  But I too am hung up on the eyes.  hmm…

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=513945580 Megan Patterson

It looks pretty good, I am leaning towards an IN. I don’t LOVE the dress, but congrats on the bod. And I kind of like the slicked back boy hair with this dress, but yeah, the eye makeup is maybe a SKOSH too much. But it’s an A for effort!

    • http://magical-sword.blogspot.com Photographer_Leia

Not my favorite dress in the world, but I’m digging the heavy eye make-up, and she looks positively stunning.  I give her a thumbs up all around.

    • Anonymous

that dress is hideous; if a designer sent that down the runway on project runway they’d be auwt for having the nerve to present a pinned up, unfinished mess

    • http://profiles.google.com/adj.blair Adriana Blair

Is it just me, or does she look a bit like Britney Spears in that second photo? Something about the forced smile…but anyway, I have to say I’m a bit backward on this one. I think the makeup is pretty fierce and an IN, but I really dislike this dress. It’s crumpled and too tight, and it gives her a weirdly long torso…overall, I’m going to have to vote OUT.

      • Anonymous

I can see the Britney resemblance, now that you mention it.  Yeah, I think it’s the forced smile.

IN. The bodice is not too tight, it fits perfectly. Any looser and it would fall off. The dramatic makeup is too much for regular people/regular events, but she is attending the NYC premiere of an f-ing HUGE movie of which she is the star…even glitter is totally appropriate, especially considering she’s only 21. Total, unqualified IN.

This gown requires someone who can SELL it:  Emma Watson can’t, Michelle Dockery can (< we only saw her seated in the VogueUK ed, which is an easier task, but showing this off in all its vertical glory on the RC would be no problem for her.)

I love the dress. It isn’t too tight, it needs to be tight to hold the weight of that skirt up.

However it’s in dire, DIRE need of boning. All that waist wrinkling….eek! It looks like a corset toile before the boning goes in. It’s pulled in but it’s collapsing into creases because there’s nothing to hold it up on the vertical. A few pieces of spiral steel would’ve kept it smooth without changing the silhouette. I’m quite stunned a dress like that would go out like that :/ It’s a shame as the shape of the bodice and the fit is great on her – if it had some bones! And her make-up is just a bit too much. And that’s coming from someone who wore a hundredweight of eyeliner at that age :)

what gets me about this dress in general {long before anyone, famous or infamous, other than the model wore it}, is how, on that model, it looks exactly like that model stuck beneath the bandeau, on either side, one very cleanly shaped & evenly-matched-to-the-other coconut half. & thats all i ever think about this dress.

poor emma watson looks like she’s as confused by the ungainliness of the skirt as i am by that top. that top, btw & obviously, looks much better on her than on its previous presenter. & she–emma watson–is just wearing the eye makeup that all interesting people attempted before we knew how to wear eye makeup. thats all.

This dress gives the illusion its falling apart and while that may be exciting on someone like Zoe Salanda (take note Zoe!) its not appealing on Hermoine.  Emma and Zoe really should have switched dresses.

OUT by a mile! This dress is ugly on anyone. The color on the bodice reminds me of what we used to call baby-shit brown. The fabric on the bodice looks like burlap and the ‘pick-up’ on the skirt is just strange. The eye makeup – too much, and there is never a call for gold leaf anywhere except the runway (unless you are Cher or possibly Madonna). And as far as it being difficult to do eye makeup without making it look as if you have too much on – that’s why there are professional make-up artists.

The bodice does not look too tight to me.  There is no boob spillage or fat rolls.  And make up should be fun!  I get a little tired of seeing all the red carpet stars with their fake boobs, fake faces, and natural look make up.  Glamor and “natural” do not go together!

In. It’s her last time to pretend she’s magical, why not go a little Xanadu with the makeup? Being honest, I gasped out loud on my initial viewing of her in this dress, so it’d be impossible for me to give it an out.

IN! She’s trying new things, and it doesn’t look bad at all. I do wish she would smile, though.

In, but mostly because she took a risk.  I definitely would have styled her differently.  Would have gone much lighter on the eye make up, and given her a ‘do with lots of height/volume.  Also, who the heck hemmed that dress for her? It’s way too short.  Maybe she accidentally went to the fitting in flats?

In – she’s pushing the boundaries. It’s the last big premiere for HP so I have to give it to her for trying something different.

In. The slick hair suits the deconstructed look of the dress. The eye make-up matches the dark future vibe of the dress. The bodice is extremely well-fitting with no showy or garish spillage at the tops or sides. The color and drape of the skirt is fantastic. I love the earrings and the absence of other jewelry really brings the focus to the flawlessness of her skin and the drama of the eye make-up.

Ack! OUT!! I love Emma Watson, and applaud her trying different looks, but this…. No. I like the hair, actually, but the dress is awful. It looks like the fabric(gorgeous fabric to be sure) was just stapled onto a bodice that doesn’t fit her anyway. I don’t mind the makeup, but I certainly don’t love it. Out, out, out.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PKEMUFJDBZL5KUVSXY22FFS3EM Deborah

In. I love the idea of the dress tremendously–the fabrics are great and I think it’s really flattering in the bodice–but I think the skirt looks a bit ridiculous. Nevertheless, I think she looks just great, and I applaud the extra bling bling. The chances that she’ll get to do something of this epic a caliber again are fairly slender.

    • lilibetp

I think the dress is very pretty down to the hips, where it looks like they just tacked some fabric on randomly.  I HATE her hair for dress up.  It only works on her for casual kind of stuff.  And unfortunately, she just doesn’t have the kind of face that looks right with a bunch of makeup on.  The London dress and makeup were much nicer.  Didn’t like that hair, either, though, in case you’re wondering.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_6PUVFQ7YCZZFZRIER6BEJ4HVYE Amye

    • aussiegal77

I like the bodice on the dress but you do have a point that it might too tight.  I don’t love the skirt though, it’s so overwhelming!  I don’t love her hair either….but I do think she did well with the make-up.  Oh crap, I’ve painted myself into indecision corner……hmmmm…..I have to say that this is an OUT for Emma.  She’s looked way better.

I love the dress on her and on Michelle Dockery.  They bring different things to it.  I don’t think the hair is all that flattering but it really works with this dress and the heavy eye makeup.  At first I wasn’t sure about the eye makeup but the close-ups are so over-the-top fab that she gets points for going all out.  And the jeweled eyes totally look like something a glamorous, grown-up witch might work!  Big IN.

Also, there was a heat and humidity index of 105 yesterday (actual temp in the 90′s).  Even at night it was really sticky and uncomfortable.  I can’t imagine standing outdoors yesterday for any length of time in an evening gown and heavy make-up.  That may explain why she looks slightly less than thrilled to be there.

OUT.  She’s way too tiny and still too adolescent looking to pull off all that dress.  That looks pretty ridiculous on the model.  I like how the Fug Girls had an entire faux conversation where Rupert Grint and Daniel Radcliffe were making drapery and “Gone With the Wind” jokes about the dress, because it really looks like someone ripped the straps off her actual dress, which would still be way too much, and she just pinned the ripped gown to her corset and called it a day.

This is the sort of gown that’s best suited for walking runways and posing. It doesn’t take well to riding in limos or sitting in theatre chairs. I think the dress is a brilliant choice: the bottom is pure movie star/costume (with hints of drapery and scary cloaks), and the top is youthful, contemporary and unexpected. Hermione/Emma, in your face. I don’t mind the hair style, but the hair color — is that her usual? She is very pale.

I love the dress but agree that the bodice is a skootch too tight.  The makeup, though – waaaaay to heavy.  Also, if you want to grow your hair out, get some extensions.  Otherwise, cut it again while you’re promoting the movie, then grow it out afterwards.  Hate the way her hair is styled, if you can call it that.

definitely in. she looks great in the dress, and i love the dramatic face/hair, too. if emma watson is channeling a little Cher, then that seems about as far away from the “english rose” concerns you two voiced (further than i would have imagined, actually). good for her!

It’s all a matter of context, isn’t it? I’m sure someone has already pointed out that this was one of the dresses in the Downton Abbey editorial, and it looked pretty fabulous in the posed photo. I think it probably looked pretty fabulous as it moved too.

I love Emma, and I so sympathize with her having to go from little girl to teenager to woman in the public eye, being judged every minute of every day.  The raccoon eyes are a bit over the top, but overall, I think she looks good.  I think the one accessory she really needs to carry off a look like this is the confidence she’ll have developed in the next five years.  Still, gotta give it to her:  IN.

In overall but it just seems too too for this event. And her eye make up is a bit too Kristen Stewart. But she looks great and very scene stealing.

Out. Everything you said, but I also detest the dress.

out. i hate that dress, it looks unfinished and not in an interesting way. the color of the bodice is ugly. even though i hate the dress so much, emma could have pulled it off with the right hair and some statement jewelry. but this hair is too severe and the makeup too heavy.

      im gonna say IN.

i actually really like the hair & makeup on her. its a nice change, so ill take it.  its the dress where this look kinda loses me. i get the concept of the dress & she gets points for wearing something different & daring to such a major event.  but it still looks like a child stapled dirty old drapes onto her dress.  i wish we could just tear all the mess off & reveal a sleek gown in the color & texture of the bodice. now that would have been hot.

Out. Does anyone else see the correlation to Kayne’s “couture” dress in PR Season 3? Anyone?

    • Anonymous

I barely noticed the eye makeup because I was distracted by the awfulness of the dress. It’s like a Project Runway entry where the contestant started to  make a fitted strapless dress, decided it was boring, and switched to a poofy prom dress. Then they confused the deadline with a fitting and the poor model had to go on the runway while wearing the first dress, and in the process of stepping into the 2nd unfinished dress. I’m not sure why the contestant wanted the model to try one dress on over the other but it may have something to do with the “herbal” cigarettes they were smoking.

    • K W L

Sure, there’s a tiny bit of disconnect, but it seems calculated to give the viewer a double-take. This isn’t a look that makes you go “Oh, pretty”; it’s a look designed to make you take (at least) a second glance and go… “Hermione?!”

Boyish, slicked-back hair paired with the eye make-up of another gender; a dress which is all body-hugging bodice and a skirt that’s draped on like the mother of all bombastic sequels… It’s the perfect look to wear to a premiere of the Final Installment, after which Ms. Watson no longer has to play-act the English schoolgirl for the rest of her career. And if the bodice is too tight on her, it’s even tighter on the model. And, and… if she’s giving you the finger, that’s a good thing, right? IN.

    • Anonymous

Love the makeup…she’s young and it’s fun to play around with.  What I do not like is the fit of the bodice.  When a girl that young and thin has shar pei skin rolling over by the pit…it is too tight!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=583342965 Melody Sellers

Oooh, perfect with giant Edie earrings.

    • Anonymous

I think she looks great. A nice dark look for the finale. I generally hate dresses like this (two dresses smacked together), but I’ve come to accept that they exist, and the color looks great. Doesn’t look small on her at all, especially when I compared to the runway model. So I give her an in.

    • Isana Leshchinskaya

      so. friggin. IN.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1214755227 Meira Niibori

I think I’m going to stick with my initial reaction, which was “Oh, so close!”  To me it seems like the parts don’t quite gel into a cohesive whole here.  I really do like the hair, especially with the dramatic eyes and dress.  I wish the rest of the face, particularly the lips, didn’t fade out quite so much – doesn’t have to be blood red lips, but a little color would balance the eyes and make them look a bit less… harsh?  It’s not that I dislike the eye makeup she has on, but it doesn’t seem to go with with rest of the face as-is.  Then there’s a whole lot of bare skin, and that very plain oatmeal-y burlap-y bodice on top of the luxe, dramatic skirt….  Somehow it feels like the hair, eyes, and skirt are from outfit A and everything between the nose and hips are from outfit B.  And outfit B is a total snoozefest.  Perhaps with some color – a bit more blush, a slightly darker lipstick – and maybe a bit of sparkle in a necklace or brooch somewhere between the two halves of outfit A, this would have been great.  As it is, it’s an almost, a couldabeen, which means it’s (reluctantly) OUT.

Um, not sure. Love both the dress and the makeup, but she also needed:
      • a little tan
      • a (way!) bigger updo
      • chandelier earrings

I think what’s lacking here is balance. The eye makeup helps, but is not enough to counter the huge skirt.

    • http://tigergray.blogspot.com/ Tiger Gray

If she’s going to go over the top she needs some huge necklace. I mean, that dress and that makeup do not scream understated. Otherwise she looks confused.

My thoughts exactly! Those judges are so fickle, you never can tell… although Kors or Garcia or both would be happy with the finished hem, I imagine ;-)

    • Anonymous

Sooo late to this game. Gotta say OUT. Makeup is not the major reason, nor hair. She’s too little for the grandly draped skirt without something (besides 3 lbs. of mascara) up top to balance things. Hat, major, major necklace, even a very military bolero jacket.

Laughed out loud at your characterization of those of us voting Ms. Saldana in. You guys are so kind.

    • Anonymous

She would have been out for hair and make up alone but…
What an ugly and ridiculous dress! It doesn’t even look like a dress so much as a bodice with some fabric stapled on to it. Crookedly. Like what a Project Runway contestant would do if they had run out of inspiration, time, and the will to carry on.

    • Anonymous

OUT. I can’t agree with you on the dress.  The skirt looks limp, like someone just pinned a satin sheet to an old corset. The makeup is far too dark.  She just looks heavy and miserable to me. Between the hair and the heavy makeup and the limp sheet, she looks like she’s melting in the heat.

    • Shawn Hill

Well, you did tell her to take some cues from Kiera Knightley, didn’t you?

    • Robyn Morelli

IN – initially I thought it was pretty ugly, but it’s really grown on me. It’s sexy!

    • Anonymous

She is almost exactly 50/50 for me. It’s hard to vote. I love the dress and the hair and earrings. I hate the eye makeup. What I hate most of all is how clearly uncomfortable she is. I’ve seen a bunch of pics of her in this dress, and not one shows her happy, or comfortable, or really working it.

      OUT.

    • Anonymous

I’m going to say IN!  I like the hair and make-up better than the dress.  I like that she’s experimenting and expanding her horizions.

    • Anonymous

I love her, I think she’s so cute and she should just freaking stay cute while she’s young enough to pull it off without looking desperate or crazy.  She doesn’t even look comfortable and I hate to say I hate this dress on her, and I might just hate the dress period.  The proportions look off and it looks messy and wrinkled.  But the worst is the eye makeup.  WTF?

    • http://twitter.com/onetimeko maybe more

In. I think she looks fierce! Although I wish there were some darker colors involved (accessories, maybe?) to help balance the vampy eye makeup.

    • http://www.facebook.com/WendyLKaufman Wendy Kaufman

I don’t think the bodice is too tight, as much as that it would be vastly improved with a bit more boning. Those wrinkles are due to not enough boning, not that it’s too tight. Wish the bodice fabric was a bit less casual, too.

    • http://summerborn.livejournal.com/ Summer Born

Can I give her an IN because I absolutely love her and think she’s taking a good risk, even if there are a few missteps?

    • http://twitter.com/shann_slade Shannon

In, but it’s close to out. She looks great… but I can’t help but feel that it’s a dress made for someone a bit more mature looking; she looks like she stole it from her older sister’s closet. Emma still looks like a 16 year old to me.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OLSER5H3A6FPBAZOEIQIOBHAYM Elizabeth Rust

Out!  That dress looks like she hasn’t finished putting it on yet! Even on the model, it looks as though she was interrupted mid-dressing. (I think Emma herself looks fine, but the style of that dress just bothers me!)

    • Anonymous

OUT. If I could make that larger I would.

The wrinkles and bad draping make the skirt look like cheap poly satin, and the bustier appears to be made out of burlap. (Also, if, at her age, a dress appears to make one’s boobs look like they’re melting, it’s a bad fit.) The eyes are AWFUL.

Oddly, I rather like the hair. Maybe because it’s so aggressively minimalist I don’t even see it.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sauchih Sau-Chih Feng

Ah, I’m commenting past the voting period, but No. OUT. I know I’m going to sound like a harsh woman that people are going to hate, but she’s not skinny enough for this dress. I’m not saying she’s fat, but look at her armpits in this dress. It’s not flattering. That’s why people like SJP look much better in it, because SJP doesn’t have baby boobs (otherwise known as armpit fat). Also, it’s such an opulent dress, that color is so rich and luxuriant, it doesn’t go with her short hair at all. The make up doesn’t go with her short hair at all. Maybe if she’d mussed up her hair, rocker style, but that wouldn’t go with the dress either. It’s just a series of bad decisions, and the only reason she doesn’t look fugly is because she’s a young and attractive woman. But it’s not a demonstration of good styling.

    • Anonymous

OUT.  I get that she’s trying to be more grown-up and get past the image of Hermione, but this is just not hitting the right notes.

    • Margot Brose

This is a nice dress, but it looks a zillion times better on the model. Also, whose idea was it for her to do her makeup with a sharpie?
