In or Out: Hilary Swank in Elie Saab

Posted on June 27, 2011

We’ve given this gal a hard time over the years, but when she gets it right, she gets it right.

Hillary Swank attend the MAC Cosmetics Sponsored IIFA Awards Presentation in Toronto in an Elie Saab gown.

Elie Saab Fall 2011 Collection/Model: Jac (IMG)

We were going to make this a WERQ but heat makes minions and Bitter Kittens feisty and argumentative, so maybe you’ll surprise us all and tell us it’s boring or unflattering or whatevs. Is it the most amazing dress we’ve ever seen? No; not even on her.  She has a history of wearing slinky gowns that are just on this side of slutty (and sometimes are way past the county line, going 80 in a school zone). To be diplomatic about it, it was obvious she decided the body was the selling point in terms of her looks and she went that route for a long time. This dress is a nice way of staying true to her style, but not giving off even the slightest whiff of being tacky or too revealing. It’s everything she wants in a gown – slinky and low cut, either in the front or the back (or both) – but she looks classically beautiful instead of trying to draw your attention to her butt or boobs. Also, we love the various shades and colors, which give it a shimmer even when it’s not standing in a pool of light. The makeup’s very polished, but the hair’s a bit aging and a blowout would soften the look considerably. There. Consider this look ASSESSED. Your turn:

VOTE NOW!

IN! Perfection! Brava!
OUT! Boring! Boo!

The Minion Opinion on Fergie’s new face “sad dominatrix” getup was a loud and near-unanimous OUT.

In. Gorgeous and simple, but the beading gives it an ornate sense.

But who’s the asshole, standing next to her?

  • Anonymous

She looks great. She is over dresses and almost always is. She dresses against “type” all the time too. My biggest quibble is that she is wearing an dress that is intended for the Fall and Winter in the hottest part of the summer. She still IN. Inner at Christmas thought.

  • Anonymous

In, she looks stunning, beautiful and sexy without crossing the line into vulgarland or tryingtoohardville.

  • Anonymous

She looks like tinsel and every girl out there is wearing some version of this dress… but I’ll give her an IN.

  • http://twitter.com/margo8461 Marguerite

IN! Absolutely stunning. So glad she went with the red shade rather than the black shown on the runway. Black is always a safe choice and this dress in black is classically beautiful. But choosing to wear the dress in red turned it, and her, into a stand-out.  Truly glamorous. IN

  • Anonymous

in in in Her makeup is perfect for her face!

  • Anonymous

    So very in!

  • Anonymous

In. Given that the event is sponsored by MAC, why not wear lipstick red? I think she looks great and I don’t mind the severe updo either. Her hair is shiny so it looks youthful enough to me. And I disagree with Sewing Siren that red is for Christmas. Since when does Christmas own red???? Red and green maybe.

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

It’s not for Christmas because it’s red, it’s because it’s from a FALL collection, which to non-fashion people is known as winter.  Even in black it would still be a winter dress.  While the cut isn’t so covered as to make her die of heat stroke, the fabric is almost assuredly very heavy and not particularly comfortable in summer heat.

      • Anonymous

Read her post — Sewing Siren specifically mentioned Christmas, and this look being more in then. And BTW, they’re in Toronto.  It’s been in the 60 and 70s there. I  think Swank is fine in a beaded gown there right now.

      • Anonymous

Yeah, that’s pretty much it. Red (but coral is better than ruby)  is fine for summer. But silk satin ruby red gowns with all over heavy beading are intended for winter wear.  Hillary is  certainly not alone dressing off season, They all do it. Probably because the designers are more interested in lending the dresses that were most recently on the runway and currently being feature in the fashion magazines. Spring 2011 is old hat.

        • Anonymous

wish we could ask her. maybe she just liked the dress and didn’t think about the timing, the seasonality of the color…

          • Anonymous

I absolutely think she likes , even loves (judging by the look on her face) the dress and didn’t think about the seasonailty of it. It does look great on her no doubt about it. I just think it would look even better in the correct season.

          • Anonymous

but what does “correct” mean anymore in the context of celebrity (or even ordinary people) fashion?…who decides? Where is it written? Mrs. Vreeland isn’t around anymore to tell us what’s what, you know?

          • Anonymous

It is  the designer who decides the correct season for a particular garment.
Traditionally the fabric weight, construction , and fiber content are what determine whether it is suitable for a particular season. The same is true of the type of embelishments that are to be used.. Color also plays a role, such as white for summer, but trends can supersede tradition in color.

Ultimately it is the designers decicion to lend these dresses out and have the celebrities wear them off season. So I guess it doesn’t matter a bit.

          • Anonymous

you hit the bottom line there, SewingSiren! if the designer is happy seeing a heavy beaded dark red gown on the RC in June, who are we to quibble? So if she added sapphire & diamond jewelry we could call it a Fourth of July outfit…

This is a very good look for her.

definitely In. but can we also asses the man in the far right of the last picture? Gah!

    Wait, it’s summer, right?

    IN!!!  Glamourous and classicly beautiful.

  • Anonymous

    IN. She looks awesome.

She’s at a turning point, though. She’s a few years off 40 and so far, is letting her few lines show. Her figure (which I’ve always admired) has always looked to be the product of exercise and natural athleticism. (Even with the breast implants.)  If she wants to keep going for skin-baring va va va voom, she’s going to have to soften her face/body or she’ll start to look ancient compared to her contemporaries who’ve been getting regular cosmetic tune-ups since their early 30′s and who carry more subcutaneous fat.

  • Anonymous

IN, even though her boobs look a bit smushed.

  • Anonymous

IN, IN, IN!  She looks fantastic, every inch a movie star with a pair of Oscars.  It’s a great dress, fitted perfectly.  My question is the other, more bitter kittens who are bitching about this being a fall/winter dress.  What gives?  It’s LSEEVELSS, it’s BACKLESS, it is without season.  I suspect the suggestion was subliminally planted with the green carpet/red dress issue.  When did astroturf become the new event flooring of choice?

  • http://twitter.com/mcglory13 mcglory13

    Gorgeous. She looks fantastic.

  • Anonymous

I’m frankly shocked to see her so well-dressed. She usually leaves me scratching my head and wondering what she’s thinking.
The hair is bad, though. It really does nothing for her.

  • Anonymous

Oh, I think this is SO much better than what she often does. Only thing I don’t like is the eye makeup. IN.

  • Anonymous

IN, but this bitter kitten wishes she would have kept the cap sleeves, which make the dress much more striking up top.

This is her style, I don’t know why she thought she had a “body” shes kinda boxy but a dress this style (She’s worn tons like this over the years) highlights her best assets.

She’s giving off a very Julia Roberts vibe.

Nevertheless, I think she looks great.  It fits like a dream, and it’s very chic.  She’s IN.

IN! Red is a good color for her. She looks good.

  • Anonymous

I also have been highly critical of her fashion choices and personal appearance…but this look, and the last one too, have been tremendous improvements.  She looks good, and I really like the style and colors of the gown.  I think it’s WERQ worthy….so, obviously she’s IN.

A very deserved IN.  She looks smashing.

She looks beauty. Hair and makeup are nice, but the dress is beautiful. Love the fit and colors; shimmery = better than shiny. IN.

She looks fantastic. Seeing her in a low-cut backless dress reminds me of a story a friend related after Swank wore that midnight blue backless dress when she won her second Oscar. My friend worked with a woman who asked if he knew where she might find used workout equipment for sale, because she was determined to start working out and getting a back like Hilary’s. “When your back is fine, you know you’re fine!” she said.

My friend replied, Girl, you don’t need exercise equipment, you need a time machine!” (To which she replied, “Boy, I’m going to give you a beatdown for that one!” LOL)

That dress is utterly gorgeous.  Love the color, it suits her very much, and I like the slight modification at the shoulder.

    A definite IN.

  • Lisa

I can’t give this an IN or an OUT.  She looks beautiful, and I love the dress, the hair and the makeup – something that I rarely think about her.  However, she needs to stay the hell away from low cut exposed backs anymore – her back looks awful!  All those bones sticking out with all that loose chicken skin – not a good look for a backless gown.

  • http://www.facebook.com/crystal.harnden Crystal Harnden

This is very very similar to her 2005 Oscar dress, but I love the color!

  • Anonymous

In. She looks great and very comfortable without showing too much. Agree about the hair, though.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1303837450 Lauren Dorsee Dillon

I typically don’t care for her but even I have to admit she looks mighty fine here. Very little if any trailer park and that’s a hard thing for her to conceal (I know, I’m going to hell already so one more snipe will just make the fire all that hotter). I love, love, love the dress, the shade variegation is stunning. And I like her hair as well. It’s much better than the Diaz just-been-beaching-it non-style.

There, bitchy enough? It’s friggin’ 113 degrees here in Scottsdale.

  • Anonymous

Her eyes look somehow a little weird, but everything else is absolutely gorgeous. The red dress is more complicated and intense, yet somehow more delicate than the black runway dress, and it shows off Hillary’s figure to perfection.

In.  Great dress (love the subtle draping) and she certainly is working it.  I didn’t know what the “IIFA” was so I looked it up: International Indian Film Academy, so maybe she chose the red over the black in homage to the traditional saturated colors of the subcontinent.  Her hair looks good to me the way it is—why compete with all those sequins?
