The stars came out in high style for the New York City Ballet’s Fall Fashion Gala, with several attendees sporting Iris Van Herpen creations in tribute to her costume work with the Ballet this season, and some came dressed as that old classic, the New York City Character.

What a character! As such, there’s no real fashion critique to be made here. Her goal is to look silly and as always, she accomplished it.

What a character! As always, her goal is not to look silly, but to look like she doesn’t care about how she looks (which is largely true). She always goes for these featureless sorts of beach coverups and they do nothing for her. A traditional caftan would look so great on her, but she always steps out in these awful satin things.

Also a character, but a character in high fashion. There’s not much styling to be done with a dress like this, but we like what she’s done with her hair. The shoes should probably have been black.

There’s not much use in doing conventional style critiques when it comes to van Herpen designs, because most of them are more akin to art pieces than fashion. Having said that, as amazing as this looks on her, the entire bodice looks overdesigned in an unflattering way. Those wrinkly nude panels are not her friend. We suspect they were an addition to make this more red carpet-ready.

It’s so nice to see SJP back in exuberantly beautiful fashion instead of the weirdass shit she was wearing on And Just Like That. We also wonder if the lining here was a last-minute addition or concession because the overall design is stunning, but that wrinkly lining is coming close to ruining it. It should have been fully lined and probably in black. But nothing can take away from the insane drama of those sleeves.
