As royals tend to do now and then, Princess Cathy set her jaw and got to work checking two grim occasions off her duty list (the funeral of the Duchess of Kent and the visit by the US president). She tends to be pretty good at wrangling her style for occasions like these. In fact, as odd as it might sound to say it, some of the Princess’s best style moments were when she was attending funerals.

But is that really such an odd observation given her job description, which literally includes attending state funerals? It helps that funeral style maps quite well onto her own formal day style, so all she has to do is pick a coat and a hat in black and she’ll look great. There has been much discussion of late regarding her hair and we tend to keep the critiques light for an occasion like this, but that is a LOT of it.

It’s literally just her funeral outfit in a color, which is why her funeral outfits tend to work so well. One of the main arguments for dialing back the royal hair a little is that kind of length and volume doesn’t look good in the kinds of hats her duties tend to call for, especially when she wears these pillbox-adjacent styles that lift off the head. We suspect she did a lot of signaling to aides with that bag.
