Part one is HERE! Part two is OVER THERE! We’re in the TOP TEN now and boy, are you gonna be pissed at us! Let’s court controversy, kittens!
10. Timothée Chalamet in Louis Vuitton at the Oscars
While Prince Timmée’s backless halter top was considered by many to be a fashion game-changing moment, we tend to think his beaded lace bolero and lack of a shirt at the Oscars was a much bigger deal. Like it or not, the prestige actor/actress uniform of a tuxedo or a gown is almost certainly not going to survive the next decade or so. Fashion doesn’t actually shift and change as much as prognosticators tend to say, but one area that’s changing rapidly is formalwear and Timmée’s leading the charge, combining high formal prestige with a little bit of rockstar attitude.
9. Jada Pinkett Smith in Jean Paul Gaultier Couture at the Oscars
Honestly, if you didn’t associate this dress with the slap, its inclusion here would be considered a no-brainer. This was, in our completely unhumble opinions, easily one of the most dazzling and unusual red carpet gowns of the year.
8. Anya Taylor-Joy in Dior at the Harper’s Bazaar Women of the Year Awards 2022
Such is the magic of Anya Taylor-Joy’s fashion-wearing powers, because if you asked us to name the two things we hate most in womenswear trends, it would be broken-doll looks and foundation garment looks – and yet here she is, in our top ten, a broken doll in her unmentionables. What can we say? She looks amazing and, more important, she looks like no one else on a red carpet this year.
7. Kristen Stewart in Chanel at the Oscars
Like Timothée Chalamet, Kristen Stewart hit the Oscars red carpet and changed the game; in her case, by showing up a Best Actress nominee with her girlfriend by her side, rocking a pair of satin shorts instead of the expected prestige actress type of gown she tends to loathe. A moment of pure punk queer girl attitude in a time and place that doesn’t often make room for that particular form of self expression.
6. Lil Nas X in Balmain at the Grammys
We have but one Queer Black King and his name is Lil Nas X. No one brings the gayness with as much style, power and pure joy as he does. We hope every little gay Black kid looks at this and sees their superhero.
