Toronto International Film Festival: Renée Zellweger in Ulyana Sergeenko at the “Judy” Premiere

In which T & Lo opt for a little preemptive crow-eating.

Here is Miss Renee, currently watching the crest of the upcoming Reneeassance come barreling toward her. Her dress is fine and if what we’re about to say is true, we hope she considers upping her style game considerably, but that’s not really the point here. The point here…

… is that we nay-sayed all the trailers and preview information about this film because despite the fantastic makeup and costume design, not to mention the skills of its star, we could not buy her as Judy. All we saw was Renee in Judy drag. But the buzz out of the festivals is not only that her performance is good, but that it’s stunning – and most of them mention the fact that her essential Zellweger-ness comes through but it doesn’t appear to matter. We can get behind that. Plenty of excellent biopic performances failed to nail the mimicry exactly. We’ll have to get over our reservations when we finally get a chance to preview and review it, because it sure sounds like our initial impressions we’re dead wrong.

See? We’re bitch enough to admit it. Also: Renee, step things up.
