It was a big floppy hat day for Queen Max as she welcomed the President Of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, to the royal palace in Amsterdam on his state visit to the Netherlands. The first picture is going to be a bit of a shock, but keep scrolling. She’s not wearing culottes, we promise.

It’s just a very stiff skirt. We’d rate this as one of her more successful day looks of late. As we noted with Princess Cathy yesterday, if you’re a super-matchy royal girl, a totally neutral look will give you that style high you’re seeking without everything looking like it was dyed to match. As fun as that hat is, we don’t think it works all that well with the outfit. It’s way out of proportion and the styles don’t quite gel. We also don’t think the gloves look right and the pearls come off a little mumsy to our eyes, but even so! It’s a fairly well put-together look despite our bitching about it.
