SINNERS Star Wunmi Mosaku at the American Black Film Festival Honors

It’s funny. We’re having a near total opposite reaction to Sinners star Wunmi Mosaku’s choice of dress for the American Black Film Festival as we did yesterday to the dress she wore at the Film Independent Spirit Awards. For that one, we walked back the idea of putting the dress up to a vote because we realized late in the day that it was stunning and nearly flawless on her. We picked this one for the spotlight partially because we were going to do some sort of “We regret to inform you that Wunmi Mosaku’s winning streak has ended” bit, only to find late in the day that her look really isn’t that bad.

We suppose if you’re going to go all-in on red satin, you should pick a design that emphasizes how wrinkled it gets. We can’t say we’re in love with this, but there are several things that save us from hating it: the color, the drape, and the unusual shape. These are all things she’s very good at working, which makes this a choice that plays to her strengths. It’s also clearly memorable and we would argue photogenic, in the sense that it could have wound up looking a mess but doesn’t. It helps that the hair and makeup are gorgeous, as always.
