Oh, it’s definitely high campaigning season now, kittens. In other words, this weekend saw a whole bunch of Oscar hopefuls come out for the Independent Spirit Awards. It’s always been interesting to us how the dress code for this thing has become increasingly formal over the years. It will never be on the level of the Oscars and we’re glad for it, but as it has formalized into a mandatory stop on the way, the efforts among the stronger campaigners have become more intense. Case in point, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You star Rose Byrne, who picked up a trophy for Best Lead Performance

The style dials have been turned up considerably. We like this look for her IN THEORY because it manages to be not just eye-catching, but head-turning, and also because it’s got that quality she tends to prefer: it’s a little weird, askew, or unexpected. You don’t normally see these colors in this combination on a red carpet gown. But in practice, that top is kind of a mess on her. In addition, the severe head styling really doesn’t work well with it. We’re not suggesting a big blowout and a beat for the gods. There’s an argument to be made that a dress with this much visual impact calls for restrain in the styling, but she just looks too serious from the neck up. When you’re essentially presenting red carpet Carnivale below that, we think a little lightness if not exuberance in the styling wouldn’t hurt.
