Matchy Max has been unleased on The Netherlands once again but you are not prepared for the wild swing away from royal style norms she unveiled this time. She really is the only person for whom we’ve ever had to use the term “royal scrolldown surprise.”

YIKES, LADY. Putting aside the obvious for a moment, let’s start with her love of these giant woven hats. While they’re a fun way of topping off the royal chapeau in a way that stands out for a crowd, they’re almost never appropriate for the types of outfits she wears. A big, irregular, wide-brimmed straw hat is for summer, usually more appropriate for a beachy setting, and calls for a more casual outfit than the kinds of things a queen needs to wear in public. Not that she’s all that regal in this frock, but a woven hat and a satin dress just don’t go together, never mind the color mismatch. As for the elephant in the room, well, it’s hideous and it’s covered in fringe. Everything from the waist up is fine, if a little dull (although we don’t think the color is her best friend), everything below it is tacky and ugly. Hilariously, the shoes, bag and gloves are really nice but none of them go with the outfit. The earrings would be a charming choice on a well-curated look, but on this mess, they just look like another mistake. We give her all the credit in the world for ditching the norms and having fun with her fashion, but this is just straight-up awful. We’d say it’s the worst outfit we’ve ever seen on a working royal.
