After nearly 40 years in show business, she’s been everyone’s favorite Friend, the subject of tabloid scrutiny (a romance with Barack Obama?), and has had her love life fictionalized.
In a new cover story for VANITY FAIR’s September issue, Jennifer Aniston opens up about it all (along with quotes from a few friends, like Diane Sawyer and Adam Sandler, among others).
Aniston on her previous VANITY FAIR cover—the first interview following her divorce from Brad Pitt…
“I haven’t looked at that article in forever. I just remember the experience of doing it—which was kind of jarring. It was also just a vulnerable time. But yeah, that was one for the memoirs. Journalism back then felt more like a form of sport. There’s obviously some PTSD we all have, which is why these [interviews] scare me. How are they going to misinterpret my words or take something out of context?”
On trying to help co-star Matthew Perry during his long struggle with addiction…
“We did everything we could when we could. But it almost felt like we’d been mourning Matthew for a long time because his battle with that disease was a really hard one for him to fight. As hard as it was for all of us and for the fans, there’s a part of me that thinks this is better. I’m glad that he’s out of pain.”
On if she swaps stories with Gwyneth Paltrow about mutual ex Brad Pitt…
“‘Oh, of course,’ Aniston says, waving her hand and sounding everything like Rachel Green. ‘How could we not? We’re girls.’”
On how her drive to find success in acting was in part to impress her father…
“‘Always wanting to get Pop’s approval—it was the thing that drove me and was also my biggest heartbreak: Trying to impress and prove your value to a man who’s only capable of so much.’ She felt that if she made it as an actor, ‘then he will love me as much as I love him.’”
On the next-level rumor linking Aniston to Barack Obama…
“Of all the calls you get from your publicist…and then there’s that.”
On feeling a sense of empowerment in her current-day career…
“If there’s an area in my life where I have no fear, it’s in my career—of speaking up for what I want. I don’t do it in a scary or mean way. I just know my value.”
Aniston stars in the fourth season of THE MORNING SHOW, premiering on AppleTV+ on September 17. Until then, check out the interview on VF.com, and on newsstands August 19.
