Two things you can always count on Elle Fanning to do on a Cannes Film Festival red carpet: wear a major-label luxury brand and serve up a little fairy tale fantasy fashion. We always wondered when or if she’d ever fully abandon the princessy styles that have always served her well, but even if we think she’s been working this style a long time, she’s still only 27, which means she hasn’t exactly aged out of it, and she’s smartly turned toward more sophisticated and grownup iterations in the last few years. She’s playing to her strengths, but to us at least, she’s been keeping it pretty fresh.

This is interesting to us because it combines elements we hate, like that wide, plunging neckline, elements we don’t love for her specifically, like the neutral color, and one element that we think is so pretty and sophisticated that it almost makes up for the other ones entirely; namely the placement of the beading and how it degrades and fades as you travel down the sweep of the skirt. It’s a lovely effect and we almost want to make the argument that the pale neutral accentuates it, but this girl needs color.

Like so. Once a Disney princess, always a Disney princess, we suppose. It’s too tiered and ruffled for us to fully love it, but the color sings on her and we like that there are unexpected details, like the shape of the bustline or the row of buttons down the back. While we can’t say the styling choices are the best ones for her generally, keeping the hair tight and the face fairly clean helps mitigate the Sleeping Beauty factor.
