It’s tiara time! King Willem-Alexander, Queen Maxima and Princess Catharina-Amalia got their fancy on as they hosted Sultan Haitham bin Tariq of Oman at the state banquet at the Royal Palace in Amsterdam. The queen once again lived up to her name by doing the absolute maximum.

It’s a pure stunner of a gown, designed by Pakistani designer Mahpara Khan for the queen to wear at the wedding of Prince Hussain in 2019. We especially love the little pops of color in the skirt. We realize that the whole point to royal state dinners, if not all state dinners, is to demonstrate the level of your power and influence, which means the jewel vaults get busted open. There’s really no such thing as a queen wearing “too much jewelry” and a lot of what they wear for formal events is required by tradition, but we’ve gotta say, if she wants to pile on the pearls and the diamonds and flex her way all over the palace, she’d be better off not doing it in a sparkly metallic gown. There’s such a thing as overkill. Princess Catharina gets it exactly right. Her dress is so simple that it serves as a backdrop for the regalia and jewels.
