T Lo’s FAVORITE RED CARPET LOOKS OF 2024, Part ONE

We’re getting this one in just under the wire, but we said we’d do it, we’ve been doing it for years, and we’re not going to let our spectacular European Christmas vacation prevent us from doing it again, so let’s get to it. The rules are the same as always: No photo calls, fashion shows or television appearances. These our OUR favorites and that’s why we don’t call it a “Best Dressed” list. So without further ado…

Cynthia Erivo in Valentino at the Women in Cinema Gala

It’s a bit ironic that we’re starting off with this one, because the one rule we haven’t mentioned yet is that there are no so-called “method-dressing” ensembles in this year’s list. Between the witch gowns and the tennis ball dresses and the robot suits, it all got way too Party City up in this jawn this year. But this gorgeous Valentino worn by Wicked star Cynthia Erivo, while part of a long line of Elphaba-themed green dresses, felt like it represented a sharp break from the cosplay and a return to just trying to look as fabulous as possible. Mission accomplished, we’d say.

Okay, yes. We suppose showing up for your Regency romance premiere in a pseudo bridal gown could be considered cosplay, but it’s not Regency style (not that Bridgerton was ever all that concerned with historical costume accuracy) and it has far more of a fantasy romance feel than a strictly bridal one. Besides, she just looks gorgeous and that’s reason enough for us.

ELEGANZA! It was, you’ll pardon the term, a joy watching Da’Vine Joy Randolph navigate awards season through her increasingly fabulous fashion choices. The fit is beautiful, the draping is flattering, that Champagne color looks fantastic on her and she even got us to like a bunch of fabric flowers.

Lily Gladstone in Gucci + Joe Big Mountain at the Oscars

All throughout awards season Killers of the Flower Moon star Lily Gladstone made quietly fabulous and sensitive style choices incorporating the kind of high-fashion, big-label looks an awards nominee actress practically requires, and highlighting the work of the Indigenous artisans for whom she felt a responsibility to represent, culminating in this beautifully chic Gucci gown, with embroidery by Big Joe Mountain.

Said with the utmost affection and respect: We just love this quirky bitch. As we’ve noted many a time before, she could swan her way through every red carpet, serving pure Grace Kelly realness – and to be fair, she’s kind of doing that here – but she always chooses to be a little bit weird rather than strictly chic or elegant. Personally, we love a good net veil deployment and this one certainly qualifies.

More to come in Part TWO!
