Line up for judgment, attention-seeking stars! Reader, if you’ve missed any of our 2024 Gotham Awards coverage, you should catch up by clicking here. Now let’s judge the rest.
Angelina Jolie
Sure. Fine. Whatever, Angie. We give up.
Aubrey Plaza in Fendi Couture
It feels like this Champagne/gold thing is going to be very popular throughout awards season. This isn’t a terrible dress, but it’s kind of basic, it’s clearly too small in the bust, and the color doesn’t do a lot for her.
Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor
She is seemingly unable to do things half-assed or in a small way and we truly do love that about her style, but we have to admit that this is much more appropriate as stagewear than a red carpet. It’s just too much and in the end, the design isn’t particularly interesting. As fashion goes, it’s spectacle.
Bella Ramsey in Prada
This is super cute nerd style but it’s a bit too casual for an evening event.
Brian Tyree Henry
Love the suit, love the jewelry, still not loving the trend for guys in scoop necks.
Chloë Sevigny in Saint Laurent
We feel like we should hate this, but she sells the hell out of everything she wears and besides, the color looks good on her.
Danielle Deadwyler in Alexander McQueen
It’s stunning, but too busy.
Demi Moore in Dior
Can’t argue with that, except for the falling strap, which is a styling choice we tend to hate. But whatever, the color looks amazing on her and she has a Liz Taylor like quality that allows her to wear pounds and pounds of diamonds like it’s no thing.
Elle Fanning in Dior
We tend to hate this color, which is why we’re surprised to find ourselves admitting that this looks very pretty on her. She could use a bit more in the styling, however.
Emily Mortimer in Markarian
We’ll never hate sparkle on that red carpet, but this looks like a bathrobe for a drag queen.
Jesse Eisenberg
Boring.
Jessica Chastain in Gucci
She must have been so pissed when she saw Zendaya. It’s not a competition yadda yadda yadda, but we’ll say this: We like Jessica’s gold collar a lot, but we like the more subdued white of Zendaya’s version.
John David Washington
It’s a little snug, but it’s a fabulous suit in a color that looks fantastic on him.
Justice Smith in Valentino
LOVE this. The color and that ruffled collar look gorgeous on him. We can’t say we’re loving the trim on the hem or the dainty shoes.
Katy O’Brian in Thom Browne
It’s the most tired look in celebritydom because everyone’s had a crack at it, and yet she is making it look insanely hot.
Kieran Culkin
We’re pretty sure he’s worn this exact outfit several times on the red carpet. It’s meh.
Natasha Lyonne in Rodarte
Gorgeous. Best she’s looked in ages. We will always love a well-deployed metallic bronze and she looks great in it.
Nicole Beharie
What a weird design, offering almost no visual interest except for mild confusion.
Rachel Brosnahan in Erdem
The skirt is pretty. Say it with us now: We’d like the rest of it if it were what? Go on! Say it!
Saoirse Ronan in Schiaparelli Couture
The ultimate “I’m not a hugger” dress. In all honesty, we thought we were going to see more styles like this become trendy after the pandemic lockdown. It’s kind of fun, but that pewter does nothing for her and those 1950s prom queen pumps are terrible.
Sebastian Stan in Prada
He always knows just how to ruin a perfectly good tuxedo.
Shailene Woodley
It’s giving office intern rom com lead, circa 2005.
Zoë Kravitz in Saint Laurent
It’s nice to see her get away from minimalist black mini-dresses. This is nice, but we don’t think the color does much for her.
Zoey Deutch in Chanel Couture
Girl, that’s straight-up ugly.
