We seem to be the only ones willing to say this (the fashion press is nothing but gushes), but the Challengers promo tour has been one of the oddest in recent memory. Zendaya has been hitting every metropolitan area with a movie theater wearing high tennis-themed drag (present example excluded, but put a pin in that) while Josh O’Connor has seemingly been rolling himself in piles of dirt before hitting the red carpet and Mike Faist is dressing like an increasingly depressed minister. Seriously, he’s one red carpet away from needing some sort of intervention. We would have thought that the three hot young stars promoting their fuckfest movie would be getting all sexed up on the red carpet, but Z’s been dressing like a theme park employee and her co-stars are either deadly dull or PigPen from Peanuts. As for this blessedly non-tennis-themed look…

It’s…okay. The bodice is sexy, but it doesn’t marry well to the skirt and we don’t think the competing vibes (sexy on top, princess on the bottom) produce an interesting enough tension. We were originally quite pleased to see she’d ditched the tennis drag, but we should’ve known Law Roach couldn’t help himself. She changed into this:

Awkwardly slapping a tennis ball on a dress in order to promote a tennis-themed movie is so unsophisticated and boringly obvious that it makes us cringe. Go ahead and stick racquets in her hair and wrap her boobs in a net if you’re going to be that unimaginative. Or better yet, just put her in a t-shirt with TENNIS written all over it. HARUMPH.
