Elle Fanning got her Ophelia on for the Met Gala and we are all ready to “WERQ GURL” her because we kind of love the look, but it turns out she was making a very personal connection to the evening’s honoree.

It’s very dreamy and dramatic without being wispy and ethereal. There’s almost an earthiness about it, which gives it a grownup sophistication beyond the fairy tale princesses she evokes so effortlessly. We tweeted at the time that this would be a fantastic costume for some sort of gothic horror film. But Elle had some things to say about this one on her Insta:

“When I first heard the MET Ball theme was honoring Karl Lagerfeld, I started to reflect on memories we had shared together. The memory that stood out was when he photographed me for his “Little Black Jacket” book. I was 13. Everyone that was pictured wore the same black Chanel jacket and although we all wore the same, Karl let our individual styles and personalities inform how the jacket should be worn. For my portrait, he decided to place a daisy crown on my head and put the jacket over the white dress I arrived in.”

Lagerfeld has a more than problematic history and we’re not here to defend or over-praise the man outside of his design skills and the long-term influence he holds over the fashion world, but this is actually a sweet little memory of an event that could have been uncomfortable at best, horribly exploitive at worst. And he took a lovely picture of her.
