In some ways, it’s more fun to go deeper into the Oscars red carpet coverage, after most of the major winners have been covered, when you’re mostly just spotlighting looks because you love them or they look notably interesting. Danai Gurira fulfilled both briefs.
We don’t want to be reductive here, but we’re fashion bloggers, so we tend to think of styles in phrases and descriptors, so it’s really hard not to think “African Audrey Hepburn” with this one. It’s a simple, beautiful, classic black dress with one interesting detail in that raw edge, topped off by a diamond tiara (but actually a choker) encircling a hair monument; a tribute, as she put it to Laverne Cox, to African women who balance “things on their head with an amazing poise at all times.” She looks amazing. The minimalism of the gown is set off by the perfection of the styling. All of the jewelry is stunning.
