Oscars 2026 Countdown: Elle Fanning-ology

Because we’ve been covering Sentimental Value star and Best Supporting Actress nominee Elle Fanning since she was literally a little girl, we feel a little conflicted about doing an “ology” post about her now. On the one hand, we’re thrilled for her success, but on the other hand, we almost feel like summing up her style is a no-brainer, because we’ve been doing it so long. For someone as young as she is, she’s always had very firm ideas about the kinds of styles she wants to wear and she’s settled on three distinct style personae: fairy tale princess, disco queen, or retro haute couture goddess.

We’re not sure if she considered that she would be up for awards consideration early on, but she never really adopted a specific style, either for the promo period or awards season. She just stuck to what she’s always done: bouncing back and forth between her various styles, from modern glam…

Sometimes she combined them.

But despite her clear love of fashion and her ability to convey various moods and personalities with it, she still makes a lot of rookie mistakes, like defaulting to pale colors or whites that do nothing for her.

Or letting her love of vintage mid-Century styles lead her down some dowdy paths.

But the great thing about her style is that it’s never boring and you never know what she’s going to wear at any point, which is why, even though we know her style preferences well, we can’t predict which way she’ll go.

We just hope she avoids the drab colors she tends to favor.

We’re pulling for either the sparkly glam disco version of her, or if not that…

… then the chic, elegant, restrained version. She doesn’t need or want our advice, but we’d have told her to stick with the disco glam.
