In which Harry Styles wears his usual to the Brit Awards and we try to stifle a couple of discreetly delicate yawns.
We don’t want to “Meh” a velvet flared suit and big fabric flower, but it does sort of feel like something we’ve seen him wear a couple dozen times by now. It’s funny, because it felt like we were two of the few who liked his harlequin overalls at the Grammys, maybe because they felt right for his current style but they didn’t look like something he’d already worn. The thing about being a boundary-pushing dandy is that you’re eventually going to come up against the question of whether you want to keep pushing boundaries, recycle the boundary-pushing looks you’ve already worn, or return to conventionality. Call it the Billy Porter Effect. Do you try to constantly outdo yourself, or do you settle into a set aesthetic for yourself? Not that any of this is bad, but we’re starting to think it’s time for him to take his style in a different direction.
