And now, a study in stark contrast. Zoe Kazan and Carey Mulligan hit the New York Film Festival red carpet for the premiere of She Said, the dramatization of the story of Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor, the two New York Times journalists who uncovered the Harvey Weinstein scandal.

Did we mention the stark contrast? Because you’re soaking in it. These styles are so far apart from each other that it almost feels like they coordinated, just so they could appear as total opposites.

First, congratulations to Zoe. Second, girl, there was no reason to be shoving yourself into platforms but we respect and appreciate the commitment to style. Maternity looks and red carpets are a combination that doesn’t always work that well for the wearer of said maternity looks. In our observance of such matters over the years, we’ve come to the conclusion that you’re better off either sticking with something simple, comfortable, and probably not drop-dead stylish or you can say “fuck it” and go completely nuts, throwing yourself a little pregnancy party right there in front of the press. Miss Zoe chose the latter option, and while we can’t say we’re in love with the design (you’ll never get us to love that much ruffle action happening at once), we do love that she didn’t let a little thing like a future person in her belly get in the way of some fashion expression.

On the flipside, Miss Carey kept things simple and minimal, as is her way. That’s kind of why both of these looks appeal to us even if we don’t love all of the elements in them. It’s because both women are expressing themselves through their style choices in ways that feel really true to them. Zoe likes quirky, fussy fashion and Carey absolutely doesn’t. Having said that, we don’t love how this looks like it’s melting off of her.
