Emmys 2022: Elle Fanning in Sharon Long

Elle Fanning’s love of 1950s high fashion is no passing whimsy or dilettante’s dabbling. Like Zendaya, she’s a girl who really knows her style references. She has a long history of revisiting the styles of the 1950s and for this year’s Emmys, she took the unusual step of turning to Sharon Long, the costume designer for her series The Great to make her a gown worthy of Liz or Marilyn or Grace.

We have to give Elle credit for having the foresight to go this route. The results are incredibly dramatic; much more akin to creating a character than delivering a fashion moment. The hair takes a bit of getting used to, but we appreciate the attempt to update the sort of laquered ’50s do that would likely have accompanied a gown like this. We’ll take this sort of dramatic, respectful (without being costumey) salute to the past over Sydney Sweeney’s rather lackadaisical styling in a similar style of gown.
