As we noted in our writeup of the night for Cosmopolitan, the Emmys red carpet is the easiest red carpet of the year, in terms of coverage. It’s really just about stars showing up and looking mainstream pretty in a non-challenging sort of way. It has none of the edge of the Met Gala, the clownery of the VMAs or even the cheek-sucking prestige obsession of the Oscars. It’s still a high-prestige awards ceremony (the E in EGOT, after all) where glamour is everyone’s top style priority, but there’s something refreshingly uncomplicated about a lot of the best fashion of the night, typically. Case in point, The Dropout star Amanda Seyfried’s lovely and unexpected take on the mermaid gown, courtesy of the fine folks at Armani.
It’s pretty and shimmery, in a softly flattering color, with just a tiny bit of whimsy with the fin detail at the bust. That last element may come off a little fussy, but it’s the only thing that gives the dress a bit of character and uniqueness, so we’re good with it. Besides, it really is a pretty detail. She looks gorgeous.
