When we first caught a glimpse of Sarah Jessica Parker on the Met Gala red carpet, one of us said “There she is” and the other one said “Attagirl” at the exact same time. You can always, always count on her to get it right. We suspect she’s at the top of Anna Wintour’s must-have list of invitees every year for that reason alone.

The “Anthology of Fashion” exhibit around which this year’s gala was based is meant to showcase and highlight the work of American designers who have fallen through the cracks of history or who don’t get the recognition they deserve; namely people of color or from other marginalized community. Christopher John Rogers has become one of the hottest designers among the celebrity set, but his rise to the top was largely fueled by the Black female celebrities who originally brought his work to the attention of the world. He used this opportunity to pay homage to Elizabeth Hobbs Keckley, a formerly enslaved woman who became Mary Todd Lincoln’s personal dressmaker and the first Black female fashion designer employed by the White House. You can read more about her and see the original design that inspired this gown here.  Like Blake Lively’s stunning gown, this one takes the forms and motifs of 19th Century fashion and spins them into something modern and fabulous. The bustier bodice and sleeve treatment turn this away from being a costume and the Philip Treacy headpiece (which she always deploys to great effect at the Met Gala) elevate it to exuberant, high-fashion levels. It’s a gorgeous, museum-worthy look.
