We first talked about Emmy Rossum’s limited series about LA fixture Angelyne back in the first month of lockdown, which was, as we all know, twenty-seven years ago. It feels surreal to be weighing in on its premiere red carpet two-plus years after the trailer dropped, but we live in very weird times.
Given the world-class drag transformation she executed in order to play the regionally iconic figure, we can completely understand why she’d want to stay far away from any costume-y or theme-y elements in her red carpet style. No skin-tight pink mini-dresses for this gal; not on this night. But the subtle touches of pink in her earrings and on her dress don’t strike us as coincidental either, especially given the bejeweled fan motif on the latter. Angelyne is known for posing behind her hand fan in her later years and she and Emmy struck a pose with a pair of them when she announced the series on her Instagram. It’s a cute and subtle way to pay homage without dressing in drag. She looks great. Is the hem a little wonky or are we being picky? We feel like it needs to hit lower, but we’ve been saying that a lot lately.
