The first episode of Gaslit premiered on Starz last night and while everyone is rightly impressed by star Julia Roberts’ turn as Martha Mitchell, we were far more entertained by Betty Gilpin’s wry, knowing, sarcastic take on Maureen Dean, the wife of White House Counsel John Dean. She’s just so damn good at playing those wryly sarcastic gals. We wish our good feelings extended to her promotional style.
Granted, she strikes us as the last person who’d give a shit about what we think. But she tends to make fairly decent choices – the dress is cute and the sandals coordinate well with it – but whiffs it on the finishing. Since she also doesn’t strike us as the kind of person who wants a lot of fuss and slap on her face, we think she should alter her style to fit her preferences better. A tight little brightly colored floral dress with red sandals might not necessarily call for pounds of makeup or clouds of hairspray, it does tend to look better with a little zhuzhing above the neck. If she likes the clean face/pony tail style, she’d be better going for something a little minimalist or even a little boho. She really does look like she rushed out on stage because she didn’t have time to fix her hair or do her face.
