The trailer for Pam & Tommy, the Hulu limited series about Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee’s stolen sex tape is out and it looks to us like the early viral hype that surrounded Lily James’ first appearance in one of the title roles was warranted.
We hope the real Pam and Tommy are okay with this, because it looks really good.
We’ll say this: it really nails the mid-nineties aesthetic, from the mullets to the VCRs perched on top of TVs. The cast looks fantastic and while the jokey tone seems to clash with the rather horrible exploitive nature of the whole thing, it looks like it’s situating itself as a story about the beginnings of runaway celebrity culture, sort of like American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson. There’s a chance this could be part of a current cultural wave re-examining the treatment of female celebrities and public figures leading up to the turn of the century and into the aughts, from Monica to Britney. That one line reading from Lily James (who looks to be amazing in the part), “Not like me you’re not,” makes us think comical tone aside, everyone here is clear on the unpleasant and clearly misogynistic side of this story.
