Once again, we point out our early lockdown advice to celebrities in a red carpet-free world: You’ve got pools and stylists. Make it work. It took a while for a lot of them to catch up, but now it’s become a non-carpet standard. We just never expected any star to take it this far. But when it comes to selling a look, it seems Kerry Washington is a tough act to beat.

That cap is absolutely gorgeous. She and her stylist Law Roach had to have figured it was the piece that makes the look and we agree. Would we have suggested she take the swimcap undertones and make them literal by dunking an entire custom velvet and crystal gown into her pool? No, but it made for a dramatic-as-hell shot that speaks of Old Hollywood glamour and old-school image-craft. Not only does this look like something you’d see from some silver screen diva of early last century, but it was easily one of the most-referenced pictures of the night, featured in every piece on the night’s fashion. Whether the dress survived the dip probably doesn’t matter all that much. It’s a loss-leader for the kind of lightning bolt publicity the picture provided – for her, for Etro and for Law Roach.
But can we just say? We’re not in love with the mani. Minor point, we know.
