“One Night in Miami” Star Leslie Odom Jr. in Versace at the BAFTA Film Awards

Posted on April 13, 2021

Our celebrity style coverage always narrows to the major acting awards nominees as we get closer to the Oscars. One of the many things that distinguishes this year’s coverage (aside from the fact that there are no red carpets or public appearances) is how hard the male nominees are going on their fashion choices. For most years of pre-Oscars celebrity style coverage, it’s pretty much 99% womenswear, but this year, the male acting nominees are turning it out, mostly by refusing to limit themselves to business suits. We’re specifically referring to best actor or supporting actor nominees Riz Ahmed, Daniel Kaluuya and Leslie Odom, Jr. It’s not a coincidence that they’re all men of color embracing bolder styles, brighter colors, and men’s suiting as far away from business-appropriate as possible. These are the game-changers in the game. Their style is definitionally paradigm-shifting. As recently as five years ago, the vast majority of male acting nominees, if they even showed an interest in fashion at all, would spend awards season wearing the same black tux or blue suit. No black tuxes here and the only blue suit is of the eye-searing type.

The judges have no critiques. This is all perfect and flawless. He can not only work the brightest and boldest of colors, but he’s effortless when it comes to wearing busy or focus-pulling prints and patterns. If you can handle face-blasting colors and dizzying prints at the same time, there really isn’t anything you can’t pull off in fashion. It’s so great that he’s not limiting himself.
