Andra Day wisely took her fashion in a modern and very un-Billie Holiday direction for her promo and awards season appearances. We can understand the temptation to indulge in retro styles and flourishes that might remind you of the film, but we always think it’s smarter for actresses to use their promo fashion to define themselves as viable investments apart from their latest role. It’s all job-related, after all.
So we appreciate the idea here, if not the entire design.

We want to love this unreservedly, because from a design perspective, it’s a really good attempt at marrying the formal drama of a gown with a pair of pants; a Frankensteinian fashion design puzzle that many have attempted, with only a few notable efforts coming close to being considered successful. We love the color story and the shape of it, but the pants themselves look like khakis from the GAP, which is unfortunate to say the least. The cut is too boxy and the color too “Casual Friday.” Her hair, makeup and jewelry look gorgeous and we love the bodice, but it all goes south down south.
Granted, the colors look completely different on her insta, but we still wouldn’t love the cut or shape.
