“We got a message,” Lorenzo said to Tom late one night this week, with more than a little caution in his voice. “From Sarah Jessica Parker.”

“What?”

“She sounds kind of upset about something we wrote about her.”

“Ohmigod. It’s almost midnight. Can we please deal with this in the morning?”

Why did SJP contact us? Why were we so reluctant to deal with it? Some of it had to do with her feeling that we painted an inaccurate picture of her and some of it had to do with our longstanding feelings about how to operate ethically as independent bloggers. In other words, there was a LOT in the mix and we’ll tell you all about it in this week’s podcast, because not only did we reply to her, we agreed (again, with trepidation) to get on the phone with her and hash out what was bothering her. The result? A pleasant, nuanced and illuminating conversation in which the celebrity side and the celebrity coverage sides of the ecosystem of fame got a little opportunity to talk directly to each other rather than through publicists or agents.

Just a little glimpse of what goes on beyond the scenes, both in our world as professional bloggers and in her world as a celebrity of long standing, with full knowledge of everything that comes with it. We went into it with a good deal of reluctance, but it turned out to be one of the best conversations we’ve ever had about what we do and how it relates to what celebrities do.
